No waiting list for the rally. Last year we had some Airstreams attending the rally from nearby campgrounds. The rally will take anyone who comes and as many who come.

As to Topsail Hill Preserve, the campground doesn't have a wait list for spaces. Your best bet is to watch this thread for cancellations and the jump on the state park reservation system to snag the spot. Each year we've experienced a number of cancellations in the weeks prior to the event, even up to the beginning of the rally. From what I can tell everyone who was patiently waiting for a spot found one.

Grayton Beach State Park isn't far from Topsail Hill Preserve. Last year we had Canopener attendees camping there. You might check availability there.

There were lots of last minute cancellations last year. We got into loop 103 at the last minute.

...which was frustrating for all of us who had to make reservations in the outer darkness, only to find if we had waited, we could have snatched up a cancelled slot from the 103 without having to pay a cancellation fee for our other sight. Just sayin'...

There are plenty of spaces available right now in nearby campgrounds.

One reason there were so many cancellations last year at the last minute was because it was so freaking cold -- I remember the forecast for Thursday night was something like 27 degrees. If the weather is better this year, I would think we wouldn't have as many cancellations.

It was so cold. It has to be warmer this year! Has to.

It wasn't that cold. It was above freezing during the day, even though it dropped below freezing at night, and not even every night. I was wandering around in a short-sleeve shirt without getting goosebumps, at least until the sun went down. But then I have a higher R-value than some of the skinny folks…

But a lot of the attendees from the great frozen north— above the Mason-Dixon Line— would have been forced to drive through some atrocious weather to get there, and wisely decided it was safer to stay off the road.

Hi Folks
This being our first time at Can opener, where exactly will the 'center of the universe' be? I have never stayed at Topsail but I see that there is an outdoor theater in one area. Is there a central focal point for the "goin' ons"? Just curious at this point.
Judy and I are really looking forward to the rally and meeting the other folks. We are heading down to Florida in a couple of weeks and leaving the AS there for a couple of months, returning before the New Year. I can appreciate the bad weather cancellations if the weather is poor for pulling a rig south. As for the cold.......... we had three months of sub zero last winter up here. COLD aint gonna happen at Topsail!
see you all there. Cant wait. Bringing some cold Canadian pints. Red will be saying EH! after a few samplers!

Outside party central is Wild Oak Lane, inside events are in the recreation/club house. Have to be flexible with the weather situation that time of year.

Aren't there videos of some past festivities? Maybe a search on YouTube for CanOpener...

During the day it was fine, the nights and mornings were cold especially Thursday.

I can handle the cold. It is the cold rain that gets to me. Stiffens up the tired joints and puts a damper on outside events. Allways warm and cozy in our full featured Airstreams.

Chuck, that is a truly righteous video! Nicely done; I guess I had not seen it before.

Of course, it is also possible I have seen it 8 times.

Either way, great job.

Yes there will be cancellations as we get closer to the rally/ Hopefully anyone that has to cancel will post their intent hear a day or so before actually canceling and let those interested coordinate with them to have a good shot at the site.

As for the temperature and weather we have an agreement with the weatherman that those who want coffee early in the morning will draw the water, yes the pipes freeze, the night before and he will make sure the rain stops before the Pot Luck. That has worked so far.
