Baja Trip - Around March 16th.... Join us?

Hello! We want to go to Baja around March 16th from Southern California or another entry point. Wondering if others might want to join us. The dates, itinerary, and logistics are not worked out, so are very flexible. Though we are targeting the Sea of Cortez side of Baja.

If you might be interested, please let us know. Thinking a small caravan would be ideal.

Heading to Bahia de Los Angeles by chance? I have been there quite a few times on overland trips but not with the AS.

Hi! Thanks for the question! We are flexible, but right now the thinking is entering through Mexicali and heading to San Felipe or Puertecitos for a bit, then maybe heading to Gonzaga Bay before heading, possibly to Guerrero Negro. Bahia de Los Angeles might be a possibility...

Interested?

I may be interested in this trip so I am following this thread. I am not sure given the current politics if this is a good idea at this time, although I have been told Puerto Penasco and Baja are pretty safe.

Suggest you investigate and join VAGABUNDOS Del Mar which is a long-standing group that knows Baja very well. They also run group trips with an experienced wagon master, you can obtain necessary permits and licenses through them and they have arranged affordable insurance for traveling in Mexico. Yearly dues are
$35.00 and well worth it for the help they can give you, and tips to avoid any problems

More details - Baja Trip

So, we've looked at our calendars and are thinking of the following itinerary/timing (up for changes, too)

Sunday, April 17th
Depart from Yuma or Mexicali

Thinking of the following stops:
San Felipe
Puertecitos
Bahia de los Angeles (possible)
Ojo de Liebre (Guerrero Negro)
Then going North - not sure where the stops might be, but likely 2 stops before coming back to the US through Tijuana.

Duration: about 12 - 15 days
I will be suggesting campsites that others have recommended.

We like snorkeling, hiking, biking, running, good food and good wine at night. We are not retired, but have the good fortune of flexible jobs (or working while on the road if we are having too much fun to go home).

If this sounds interesting to you, please let us know. If you have tweaks that might make it more interesting to you, love to hear those, too.

Thanks!

Bobbi

I am planning on getting together with my family Mid March in southern Nevada.
I will be following this thread with interest. I would be interested in Baja starting last week in March.

Still thinking about this trip. But would have to leave after March 23. The itinerary looks great.

The 2 concerns I have is the political climate concerning the "migrant caravans" and the federal shutdown. My wife is a naturalized citizen from central America. She has been detained in Mexico by the Mexican government because she does not look "American". I am just as concerned, if not more so, about getting back across the American side of the border.

Let us know if timing changes

Happy to keep you updated on where we are in case you want to join us along the way.

Regarding safety...I’ve never felt unsafe in Mexico, and airstream does have caravans going every year into Baja. However, I understand your hesitation given past experience.

One website recommended traveling with copies of your marriage certificate and birth certificate. Not sure if it helps, and doubt I will even bother to find mine.

This sounds like a fantastic trip. Have always wanted to go when the Baja Races are ongoing and follow the action. Please keep this updated with your trip plans. This has been on my bucket list for years!!

Hello! We ended up not going as the timing did not work for anyone else. From talking to quite a few people, it seemed best to do the trip in at least a small group to avoid the challenges from both federales and criminals. And then COVID hit for the next year... so on and so forth.

I have heard that Vagabundos del Mar will be planning a caravan to leave on Feb 19th:
https://www.vagabundos.com/beaches_whale.htm. If you join their organization, then you can post a trip and see if others might join you.

Hope you make it! Would love to hear the stories!

Mex 5 south of Puertocitos to Mex 1 is/was 20 miles of bad dirt road. The potholes in Mex 1 are bad enough. And always avoid Tijuana, better to cross at Tecate.
