VAC Midwest Rally

Hi all,
Less than 2 weeks and we'll be gathering in Backbone State Park in NE Iowa! There is still room for more fun loving folks. Here's some more info on our rally plans:
Vintage Airstream Club ‘Built Like a Rock’ Rally – Backbone State Park, Dundee, Iowa
Sep15-18, 2016
Directions to rally site: Enter Backbone State Park at South Entrance, coming through Dundee, IA. Note there are 4 entrances to the park, but only the south entrance off of 140th Ave will get you to the South Lake campground. The campground is near the lake, but not directly on it. Hiking trails from the campground or driving around to the other entrances gives access to trout stream, cave and more hiking trails. Nearest good-sized towns for groceries or supplies are Strawberry Point, Manchester (Walmart), Independence (Walmart).
Cell service may be spotty at the campground (at least ATT was for us).
Park Description from Iowa DNR website:
Backbone State Park was dedicated in 1920. It was Iowa's first state park and remains one of the most geographically unique. Backbone is named for the steep and narrow ridge of bedrock cut by a loop of the Maquoketa River and forming the highest point in northeast Iowa - the Devil's Backbone. If you enjoy bicycling, boating, camping, climbing, fishing, hiking, picknicking or if you want to take a walk back in time to the days of the Civilian Conservation Corps, this is the place for you.
What to bring?
In addition to a ‘have fun and relax’ attitude, bring your own chair, table setting, beverages, Happy Hour munchies to share, fixings for Saturday potluck dinner. Items for group use like shelters and tables would be much appreciated. Iowa weather can be unpredictable-might be warm and dry, could be cool and wet, too. And bring photos of your vintage projects!
What’s the plan?
Wed, Sep14 Early arrivals, no specific plans
Thursday, Sep15: Daytime: on your own to explore park: lake, hiking trails, cave, trout stream.Set up shelters in rally area for community meals, talks; will be in lower loop area near sites #5,6. If you have a shade/rain/bug shelter, bring it along. Also tables for serving/eating. Evening: Welcome campfire near site #5, popcorn provided, bring chairs, drinks, munchies to share
Friday, Sep 16: Morning: Pick your outdoor play spot:
Flyfishing101--Try flyfishing in trout stream (Iowa fishing license and trout stamp required for actual fishing). We have a volunteer to mentor new fisherpeopleJ
Hike Devils Backbone Trail, check out cave, bring your canoe or boat (with electric trolling motor only) to explore lake, and for hard core folks, rock climb bluffs (register with park office first).
Try geocaching – Learn about geocaching with loaner GPS units or your cell phone, practice with a Poker Run Geocache search around the campground, then go off and try to find the real Geocaches located within the park.
Yard Games – Beanbag toss, Bocce Ball in campground area
Friday 2pm: Everything Old is New Again: Vintage Restoration Presentation on renovating a 62 Tradewind named Agnes (and Agnes will be in attendance!). Followed by informal discussions on general trailer renovations being done by other members
Friday 4-6-ish Happy Hour and shared munchies
Friday Dinner – on your own, or fill up on Happy Hour munchies, followed by campfire
Saturday 8am Breakfast: Blueberry Pancakes.
Saturday 9:15-9:30am Cedar Rock House Tour. Form carpools and leave for Cedar Rock State Park, Frank Lloyd Wright designed home. Tours at 10, 10:15, 10:30 in groups of 15. Tour is about 1 hour, with 35-40min drive time from campground.
Saturday 2-4pm VAC Open House: visit other trailers for ideas and inspiration. Bring photos of your projects!
Saturday 4-6-ish Happy Hour and shared munchies
Saturday 6-ish Potluck Dinner-“Rock the Crock” theme- bring a one pot dish (crockpot, dutch oven, stovetop, oven) to share. Bring your own eating utensils, plates, beverages. Campfire following

Backbone rally...
I'd recommend
Come up through the South Entrance.
Come up through the town of Dundee IA.

Using the east entrance will put you on the park road with 2 hairpin turns, back to a county road, and then back to the South Entrance.
