Fiberglass Rock Guard

Has anyone tried to paint or refurbish the fiberglass rock guard on the front window of the 60's era coaches? Mine is in good shape but some of the fibers are beginning to show. I was thinking of painting or clear coating with a marine grade varnish.

Thanks,
Louis Hall

Hi Louis,

Our fiberglass cover is in good shape, but was starting to look a little tacky. I polished it with Gel Gloss, which pulled the dirt and grime out of the fibers and left the entire cover a nice, clean yellow. Looks so much nicer!

painted rock guard

Hi Louis,

Our rock guard had turned a terrible yellow color, and a lot of elbow grease didn't produce the results I wanted (and gave me a sore elbow to boot). So I grabbed a can of spray paint and went to town. I painted it blue to match the Airstream name plate and IMHO it looks pretty cool against the name plate. Some may not like the blue.....but it's sooooooo much better than the really unappealing yellow of days gone by.

Let me know if you'd like to see a picture.

Renee

The previous owner painted the clear stone sheild on my '69 black to make it look like the newer smoked plastic covers. It was cracked in a couple of places and the paint hides the repair.

I saw a new one at Jakson Center for ~$400 several years back that I think would fit, but I guess the repair looks ok enough, not great, but it's still on there and functional 11 years later.

Thanks for the information, I have some of that I will give it a try. Did your cover have any exposed fibers? Mine is in pretty good shape just some exposed fibers. The sun here in Arizona is pretty harsh on Fiberglass.
