10 days in a Safari Sport 17'
My wife, myself and our dog (45 lb) just got back from a 10 day trip in our little 17' Safari Sport. I thought some of you considering a tiny trailer might like a review of the trip.
First, everything worked just fine. We have been out before but this was our longest stay in the trailer so far. This little trailer sets up in a few minutes so there were no issues with getting set up. We stayed at three different RV parks. The longest stay was at the second site for eight days.
OK, it's really small. Our biggest concern was packing everything we needed for the trip. There are more places to store stuff than it appears. We ran out of things to pack before we ran out of space. Since we must travel with an espresso machine, grinder, computer, iron and ironing board; you can be sure there is enough space. We also brought enough clothes to wear that we never needed to wash clothes.
It is an Airstream so we had all the comforts of home. Full size shower, TV, microwave/convection oven, everthing you might need or want. What it does not have is a lot of room. The dog and I never had any problem with the small space. My wife did feal a bit cramped in the trailer. So this comes down to how you feal about living in a small space. Setting up the awning with a couple of folding chairs does help a lot. Not so good on rainy days though.
We ate most of our meals out but what we did cook in the trailer came out great. Even with the small sink, stove and microwave cooking for two was not a problem.
Our other major concern was the fold out bed. Our other trips were rather short hops so we just put up with the discomfort for a few days. This time was different. We got a 4" thick matress topper and cut it down to fit. What a differance! We slept very well and the bed felt great. We rolled the pad up durring the day and stored it in the shower. This works just fine but you have to dry the shower out after use. This actually worked out very well. We got home with a spotless shower!
Towing was a dream. Even loaded out, the trailer comes in at about 3000 lb. We stayed to the recomended 65mph towing speed and had no trouble.
The weather went from A/C to rain to OMG turn on the heater NOW! The trailer was always dry and comfortable. No problems with either heating or cooling. We left with 1 1/2 tanks of propane and did not need to refill the tanks before we got home. We always had plenty of hot water. The black water tank and fresh water tank are just fine. The grey water tank fills up fast, not very good if you can't dump often.
We always had electrical power so I can't say how well the trailer does on battery power. I'm thinking about getting LED lights to cut power consumption.
