What's with 16" rims?

ihave met a few guys who replaced their original 15" rims with 16" rims for easier/better tire selection, for one thing. What are the pros and cons of such a swap? Will 16" rims and tires fit in the wheelwell of a 1970 Sovereign?

Don,
Wow, those really look great. Thanks for steering me toward your posts about the tire/rim purchase.
