Question Tires on 15" Rims

Has anyone put Michelin tires on OEM 15" Rims instead of going with 16" Rims?

Yes, many have, but probably not too many with a new 30' trailer with an 8,800 gross weight.
If you want to stay with 15" rims, you'll need to find another brand of tire with an appropriate load rating, like Pirelli, Maxxis or Nokian.

Putting the Michelin 235/75r15 XL tires on your rig would be ill advised. Derated for your application that's 1964.70lbs per tire or 7,858.80lbs total rating.

Pretty much what Top just said.

The tires have to be rated for the gross axle weight. The 15" at 1980 or so load rating might just make it. (or not). I run them on my 25' that has a gaw of 6300 lbs. I have seen the 15" on a 30' from Ontario but I would go with the 16" for that size trailer myself. I thought the 30 ft came with the 16" now? Or are the 16" rims an option? Anyway I think they would be worth it on that size trailer.

If I had a big, heavy trailer. I would seriously consider a set of these Goodyear Cargo G26 in 225/70/15. Load range D 2,470lbs of load capacity.

One needs to inspect the Airstream provided stock factory wheel for it's load rating and at what pressure is that load rating obtained. The stock GYM ST tires are to be inflated (per the factory label on the street side front of the trailer) to 65psi on the Airstream Trailers.

The Michelin LTX (P) 235/75R15 XL 15" tires have a derated load capacity of 1,985 pounds at 50 psi which equals 7,940 pound load capacity for four tires. That is adequate capacity for axles rated to 3,970 pounds. Thus the 3,800 pound rated axles of the 2014 25', 25FB, 27" and 28" models can be supported. The 30' and 30' bunk have 4,500, pound rated axles and the 15" Michelins are underrated for that job. (Axle data from the 2014 Flying Cloud Parts manual)

The SenDel 16" T03-66655T wheel Airstream has selected for the Eddie Bauer trailers as an option and is now standard on the 31' Classic with a 10,000 pound GVW is rated for 3,580 pounds at 80 psi. The Michelin LT225/75R16/E LTX M/S2 16" tire is rated 2,680 pounds at 80 psi and is the tire Airstream installs.

At the Jackson Center Factory store, that 16" tire and wheel combination is offered for sale in the hallway before reaching the receptionist desk. These can be installed on most 15" wheeled trailers.

I think this thread is about solutions for 15" tires on a heavy trailer. The 16" option is well documented.
