Spare Tire Holder Question

Hello everyone. I am wondering if I can purchase a spare tire holder that will mount behind my LP tanks, or do I need to fabricate this? Thanks.

So far as I have been able to determine, the behind LP tank mount spare tire holder is no longer available. It was evidently an accessory marketed by Airstream as late as the 1970s as it was shown with 1977-79 Argosy Minuets.

I have been looking for one as well for my '78 Minuet without any luck. It does appear, however, that a competent welder could fabricate one without a great deal of difficulty. I believe that either Janet or Shari (both Moderators here on the Forums) posted photos of this type of spare tire mount found on their coaches. A Forums search for "spare tire mount" should reveal the thread.

Good luck with your coach!

Kevin

My 63 Overlander came with two pieces of formed metal welded to the A frame a couple of inches ahead of the body. The tire wedges down in these and I have a bunge cord on it to make sure. I then put a two piece (stainless still rim and plastic interior)tire cover over it to make it look nice. I think the original left the tire exposed.

Spare Tire Holder

I, too, am interested in a tire holder that mounts behind the tanks. I have a 79 Tradewind with an Excella tank cover. I am tempted to mount the spare tire in the gap between the tanks and the trailer but not sure the best way to secure the tire while traveling nor am I certain the tire will not interfere with the battery access door. Are there any suggestions or kits out there that would provide a decent solution?

Thanks!

Thank you for all the great info. I will be taking the diagram I found here to a local welder. Thanks again.

My 73 Excello has a cradle spare tire holder under the front of the box. It is attached to the cross member by two small hinged supports. The front handle is just behind the tanks and attaches to a single point in the center with a failproof design. I'll try to post pictures. This would seem like a fairly simple design to fabricate.

Spare Tire Carrier

You may find this thread helpful if you decide to build or have one made. Several different designs are diagramed & discussed.
