Removing Tires
I have a 1962 23' tradewind, I am trying to remove the tires. The tires are size 7.00x15. I Jacked the trailer up and removed the lugs but the tire will not clear the drum without hitting the side of the trailer. I don't want to rip the aluminum but the tire will not clear the hub. I removed the bearing from the spindle but it still will not clear. I now have the tire wedged between the spindle and the aluminum skirting. HELP!!!!!!!!!!

More than likely, the rubber rods in the axle have solidified.
The only fix, is to replace the axle.

Sounds like there are going to be new axles in your future. You could unbolt the axles, I guess.

Sorry to hear that you got yourself in a fix, but I think that Overlander63's comment below is the best thing to try.
Let us know what happens when you attempt that? I think the easiest way to be sure the tire is completely empty of air is to remove the valve in the stem.
The tire should become more co-operative when empty...

You may have to get under the trailer with a pry bar. Put between the frame and the arm and pry down.It really sounds to me like the rubber rods are shot and have solidified. Like someone said you could just jack up the trailer and unbolt the axles,U ,sooner or later will have to remove them.

This is a '62 trailer, didn't those have leaf springs? I thought the switch to torsion axles was in 1963.

According to RJ Dial's site the change to torsion axles was in 1961.

You have the drums have off and the wheels loose. Either bolt up the wheels to the drums and remove as an assembly or bolt up the drum to the spindle and remove the wheel only.
To do either you may have to get the axle assembly to drop more to give some better clearence. The spindle is part of the swing arm at the axle end. (With the trailer fully supported for safety) Pry down that swing arm to get more clearence. Know that the swing arm is attached to a shaft that runs inside the axle tube. That tube has rubber rods inside, With a trailer of your vintage those rubber rods frequently get hard and loose their flexibility. Only fix for that is axle replacement.

If the swing arms are too stiff and dont want to move, you might try taking out the axle assy rear mounting bolt, loosen the front one, the assy should then lower enough to get clearance. Then at least you can change the tires till you get new axle assys........Phil.

Removing either bolt, will not permit the axle to pivot, since the axle mounting bracket is resting against the frame, as well as being held in place by the square notch in the axle mounting plate.

They pivoted going in Andy, I don't see why they wont do it the opposite way. Unless they are mounted differently then mine were....Phil

Yep, they are mounted differently, in that the square notch, won't allow a twist, as it actually aligns the axle.

Removing Tires
Well I finally got the tires off. When I jacked the tire up, the tires didn't go down at all. It should have gone down at least three inches but it didn't move. I got under there with a pry bar and pulled down on the swing arm as someone suggested. The swing arm moved down about 1 1/2 " and stayed there so it looks like I need a new single axle.. Any suggestions as to where i can get an axle complete with drum, and brakes???

Bud, there are several vendors for a fully loaded axle. If you wantto search this forum you will find the suggestions.
BTW I don't think you are aware that you asked a question that will generate some excitement. I think it might.
