Need new chrome lug nuts

My alluminum wheels that I put on my 1976 31' Sovereign a couple of years ago still look good but the Chrome lug nuts are starting to show rust. So I want to replace them with a better quality lug nut and the wheel lock I am not sure what brand I have now since they were provided by Discount Tire when they installed the new tires and wheels. They are 1/2" - 20 thread size, 1.4" overall length 3/4" hex size, 60 degree cone seat.

I have looked at the Mcgard and the Gorilla lifetime guarantee versions on-line and there are mixed reviews from great to bad for both. Some of the reviews for Mcgard indicate problems with the wheel lock and key.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If your not sure on the Gorilla brand you could always go with the solid stainless from etrailer and try polishing them out yourself:

Mcgard 64010 1/2" 20...3/4" lug. Bullet proof, no rust or scratches.

Don't use the lock on the trailer, but never had a problem with them on the TV.

They are not solid stainless, as stated below. This is basically how the Gorilla lug nuts are designed. I think I will go with the Mcgard as recommended by Bob.

Kind'a sounds exactly like what I replaced on the Classic, the darn covers loosen up and if they come off you will have a great time finding a wench to fit, hate it when that happens.

Great choice, adonh. You should be very happy with the Mcgard, and the warranty speaks for itself. And also Made in the USA, to boot!

Forgive me for jumping in here late, however, I spent many of my early years in the steel fabrication and welding field while working at Taunton Engineering Works.

Dis similar metals do not get along, and stainless steel-used together with mild and or treated steel, as in hardened and or grade-8, is not recommended. This is why the stainless steel caps separate from the lug nuts, as Bob has found out.

Before I order the McGard 64010s, I thought I'd ask if there is any more feedback from members on these lug nuts.

I got them a year ago last fall, on Bob's advice, along with the corresponding locking nut. It's only been one season, but they are absolutely rust free and look brand new. They are very high quality.

Been using Mcgard products for decades.....quality all the way.

When I worked for Ford Motor Company, Ford used McGard as the vendor of choice for locking lug nuts for all FLM products in the 70's, 80's and 90's. MaGard may still be used by Ford at this point I don't know.

McGard has a very good reputation and a wide choice of products in the wheel fastener world. As to a specific model of McGard products I do not have an experience unless you want to talk about FLM applications built in the 90's.

Well, I got the McGards installed and am I happy! The original lugs were corroding and had been damaged during servicing. I know I bent two of them but a total of eight of the 24 were split or dented. The new McGards look great and should last a lifetime, at least mine.

There is a gotcha to keep in mind. My trailer came with four aluminum wheels which are pretty thick at the bolt holes. The spare is steel and thus much thinner. The nuts one orders must have enoungh internal thread space for when the steel wheel is used or the spare will really wobbhle since the bolts would not tighten.

hmmm, good point Switz. I'm pretty sure the recommended McGards were the same length (inside) as the OEM ones......but I never tried the spare with either ones.

I got some just like Robert's picture from Advance Auto up the street. Be careful though, there are two types they carry, the difference is the back end - one is tapered and the other one is not. Take one with you.

Wasn't a problem for us when we picked up a nail...

But best to check your application though, wheels vary.
