Lug nut cover removal (help)
Okay this is not a blond joke but I need help. Went out to check my nuts (lug) how in the heck do you get the covers off. I have the Alcoa rims with the covers the po put them on and spent a pretty pretty penny and I sure don't want to mess the covers up.

I check the torque of the lug nuts regularly and have yet to damage a lug nut cover. Just leave 'em in place and use a deep socket. I don't know how the covers come off anyway.

The dealer told me that they are not removable. I guess you just deal with them; I notice they wiggle.

Ok guys,This ONLY applies to ALCOA wheels on motorhomes.They make a little tool just to remove the chrome covers.I don't know what its called,but it can be found at larger truck stops.They are around the truck chrome stuff section,by the lug covers.And Yes they do come off! If you want to make your own tool,just get a large pair of plyers,place a small piece of rubber (to grip) between the plyer teeth and the lug cover (both sides) and wiggle/pull the cover off.This tool (might) also be found for sale at semi tire shops,Goodyear/bridgestone etc... Hope that helps ya! Brian P.S. New lug covers are less than $1.00 each if you destory one.Take a undestroyed one to the truck stop and match up the size you need.....

Need help as well. Want to check lug nuts before next trip, so came to the forum to gather info on the subject. The lug nut covers are tight (couldn't remove them), however, one wiggles as mentioned in other post I read. When I tighten the lug nut covers, does this tighten the lug nuts as well; no need to remove the covers? Is that correct?
BTW, looked around RV supply places and auto supply stores for the lug nut cover remover. No luck. Next stop to shop for this will be a truck stop:}
Thanks in advance.

many times the covers are damaged by incorrectly using metric sockets on (standard) SAE nuts or vice versa.
if you decide to try solid chromed nuts. i found that on my truck steel wheels, they tighten much more easily that steel nuts and they also loosen more easily. i don't think that is a good thing on a trailer wheel.

This is such a great site. As a newbie getting ready to leave for Alaska, I tried my lug nut wrench on the AS and found the chrome covers to be as others have described. I've now outfitted the tool box with deep sockets and a good torque wrench. Thanks for posting the info.
