Lug-centric or Hub-centric?

My wheels appear to be hub-centric in that they fit perfectly over the hub (pilot?) and fasten with lug bolts. Does this mean the lug bolts are not carrying the load the same as studs on a wheel? What I'm wondering is if at some point I would like to change wheels, would a wheel with a larger center bore work?

I have never had any problems with aftermarket steel wheels with large center holes.
I have seen this discussion on some of the diesel truck forums but they are dealing with a different set of problems with power applied to the wheels.

Just the normal 1/2 inch tapered lug nuts. All my trailers have studs on the drums. I have seen some models that use bolts into the drums instead. Not sure it would make any difference if properly torqued but have not done it.
All my wheels are steel. I suspect that aluminum wheels would be more likely to loosen, but that is a guess, not based on experience
