hubcap clips on wheel

Can you add “hubcap clips” to newer style, trailer rated, non-split rims, allowing the use of older clip-on hubcaps?

I have my old original moon hubcaps. The clips that hold them on are on the wheel itself…not on the hubcap….like on an old Chevy truck rim.

Looks like the clips were just hot riveted on the old rims…which means in theory I could bolt them on with ¼” stainless bolts.

Don’t want to compromise structural integrity of the wheel just for cuteness…but they are darn cute.

Anyone done this?

Don't know why it wouldn't work. The holes will not weaken the rim. I have replaced hubcap clips on car wheels restoring an old Porsche.

You should be able to buy the clips from an antique car supplier. The rivets are soft iron installed cold. There is a small tool like a punch that clamps in your vice. Set the head of the rivet on the tool. Set the clip tight by dropping a socket over the rivet and giving it a tap. Then peen the end of the rivet over with a ball peen hammer. It should be possible to install all 5 clips in 5 minutes. Get the hole spacing from your old rims and drill the holes.

This is a 2 man job. One to hold the wheel while the other taps.

Thanks, That's what I needed to know.
Any idea what suppliers might have clips/tool?

Don't know of a specific supplier. All American cars used them up to the mid 50s.

I would start by doing a Google search for vintage Ford or Chevrolet parts, one of the big antique car parts dealers should have them.

A Google search of "hubcap clips" turned up dozens of suppliers of VW clips

Product Detail

and one Chev pickup

47-63 Hub Cap Retainer Clips - Brothers Chevy & GMC Classic Truck Parts

I hope that $9.99 is for a set! You will have to check on that.

Here are instructions for installing clips on later model Chev truck rims

Installing Hubcap Clips On 8-Lug Rims

I'm sure further searching will turn up more possibilities. The VW clips are plenty strong enough provided they will fit your wheels.

hey, I have wheels with clips on my '69 Safari, but where do I find the hubcaps (baby moons would be great) to put on them? seems like the clips are maybe 8" apart, does that sound right? thanks

Same question here....where do I find the hubcaps to fit my 15 inch wheels? I have searched all over the place.

Hmmmmm, maybe there's hope for me. I have 5 wheels for our '66 Trade Wind. 3 of them have the clips. I went with the 'moon' wheel covers which is 50s (had 'em on my 48 Ford back then) and always liked the look but I would prefer the baby moon caps.

If retrofitting the wheels doesn't work out, Dumpster in Billings, Montana had three original ones. Actually, he had four until he gave me one. If he has given the rest away you may try RichardT in Bat Cave, NC. He seems to often have some. The baby moons have to be vintage. The ones for Airstream have three concentric rings around the outer edge. However, I've seen the right size and shape with one ring and with two. The only thing contemporary that I've heard will work is a stainless version.

I have a pair that I've been wanting to get rechromed. Anybody know what that would cost?
