Hub: What does the X mean?

My Overlander is currently laid up on stands awaiting new rubber on the wheels. The image below shows the the relatively new Henschen axles ordered complete with new brakes. All four drums have an "X" drawn as if to designate something significant.

What do you think the "X"s indicate? I have my suspicion, but I would like to hear everyone's thoughts.

Thanks,
Tom

Hmm. That's enlightening - The X could be his QA signature.

I learnt something...

Tom, are there weights on the drums? If so, are they oriented to the X's? My first thought is the x's are the light spots on the drums.

Weight was my first thought too

There do not appear to be any weights on the drums. I too thought the X was related to balance.

Here's an image of the drums rotated 180 degrees:

Tom the "x" is to mark the spot. If you dig under the "x" you will find buried pirate treasure. It will be in a big chest with a curved top. You shoot the lock with your flint lock pistol and it pops right open. Inside you will find gold pieces and jeweled necklaces and a big crown.

I actually am guessing it is to signify that some important step in fabrication was done and somebody used the "X" to signify that a step was done.

If you look at the symbol closely, it isn't an "x". It's the lower case Greek letter Chi (χ), which in Chinese is Ch'i, the name of the life force which inhabits all things.

So think of it as a Greco-Sino blessing, of sorts.

It certainly doesn't mean that it failed inspection and was reworked.

Your axles were manufactured in Mexico, and the workers were celebrating their happiness at drinking XX beer. Unfortunately, they were too drunk to place the second X.

It may be a QC check or an inventory mark.

Tom,

I bet it is either a balance point or just quality check that the assembly is complete and ready to ship. If the X is marked on both sides I'd think something to do with balance. The new axles I recently installed did not have any markings but they were another brand.

Put that side on first

Tom,

My guess because all you have holding up the other side is a 2x4 resting on top of an 8x8 standing vert. along with a bottle jack to hold up that side, the "X" is telling you to put those wheels back on first (the "X" side) so you can then move the jackstands over to the other side before installing the wheels?

Just giving you a hard time, but be careful.

The "X" is telling you that side goes on the drivers side. The trailing arm to the rear.

Are they 12" brakes I see? Not the 10" that comes with a 3000 axle?

BTW, I need to get with you about your AC rebuild. I'm finally getting around to rebuilding my 1966 Bay Breeze for the summer season. I'll send you a PM.

Not shown is the Mighty Burb anchoring the show:

But thanks for your concern.

Yes - you're looking at 12-inch brakes (as if Andy would have sold me anything else for a 26' Airstream )

I am happy to help all I can with your AC. PM is fine, but my email address is listed at my Overlander's website (link below).
