Hub Adjustment???

Hi everyone,

We just got back from a 5000 mile trip from Oregon to Iowa and back. I have new tires this year, but one tire that is showing extreme wear on the outside edge. It's a right side, rear tire on a 1998 Safari 25.

Does this mean that a new axle is needed, or is there a way to adjust the hub to correct the wear problem? If it can be adjusted, are there any tutorials in the forum that could help with this? if you would like to email me directly, my email address is drathaar001 at yahoo.com.

Sounds to me like a worn wheel bearing or one that was not properly seated when it was put on last. When was the last time the wheel bearings were serviced? I would have to guess that a search would find many posts on wheel bearing maintenance...and after you have done it a few times, it is only a couple hour process.

You may be ready for wheel alignment, which is accomplished by finding a shop with the ability to bend the axles.

A straight edge placed fore and aft against the center of the tires will quickly display any alignment issues; the distance to each edge of each rim should be the same. Do also consider the possibility that a belt has shifted in the tire casing to cause this issue, though.
