Believe it or not, just remove them before you begin your trip..Then, after you're setup at the site..reinstall them. WORKS EVERY TIME..
This is what I used to do before I replaced my wheels.
BTW, I left my old hubcaps at A/S for anyone who lost one..You could call them and, see if they still have them..

#10 Keep them inside the trailer until you park
#9 Calculate postage, affix stamps and engrave your home address and "If found please drop into many mailbox".
#8 Duct Tape
#7 Print a picture of the hubcap(s) in question on the side of milk cartons.
#6 Superglue, (it can suspend a man in mid air!)
#5 Put a Homing transmitter on the Hubcap's ear.
Perhaps if we all donate a little money to the forum, a research team can be put together to tag Airstreamer's hubcaps. They then can be tracked and charted, and Airstream hubcap migration patterns can finally be known.
(My guess is there is a cave somewhere in Utah where they go to their final resting place.)
#4 Petition John Walsh for a brief segment at the end of his show.
He already does say "lets recap..." so it shouldn't be too hard.
#3 Keep the hubcaps in a large sock for a few days before you put them on the trailer. If one is lost, let your dog sniff the sock to pick up the trail.
#2 Outboard magnetic pickup arms (see diagram below).
#1 Sew your name into the hubcap's waistband.

Can't you just imagine the fun things those magnets can pickup along the way.
I say get rid of the hubcaps and get the mag wheels and then install the magnets. Can't you just hear the talk around the campfire after a 500 mile day of magnet fishing.

That's what I like about you legacey people. Always engineering new ways to make things work.
For me, I may not have a lot of real wood in my A/S, but in the hubcap area, I'm all set with rims!

Balancing the "complete" running gear, stops vibration and tires pounding the pavement.
Does wonders to keep your hub caps in place, when towing.

Won't help by driving off a cliff either.
But the driver can by avoiding as many road hazards as well.
The very best way to "NOT LOSE HUB CAPS," is don't use any.That also has a fringe benefit for the careful driver when towing. When stopped, you can easily check the temperature of the hubs.
Nothing is fool proof. If you don't believe that, put it in the hands of a consumer, or an RV owner. They will prove you wrong, "every time."

So, getting back to basics, check to see that the hub caps are correct for the wheel application. If the hub caps are loose when the wheel is stationary or it requires a sledge hammer to install them, then it ain't correct.
The tabs on the center of my wheels had been moved so when* I did get correct hub caps (from a RV wrecking yard) they were not snug. I adjusted the tabs on the wheels to securely hold the cap. And based on results (a 180 mile trip one way) the hub caps are doing just fine.
*It took me a month of chasing old hub caps at wrecking yards here locatlly with a rim from my bullet in my trunk to find 4 good hub caps. They were a bit rusty. So I plan on rechroming them soon. And they fit tight.

Speaking of checking hub temps....
I bought this mainly for checking plug tray temperatures in the greenhouse, and circuit breaker temps. It will be a neat tool to have when checking hub and tire temps while on the road. They cost around $85.
