How 2 Polish Rusty Baby Moons????

The baby moons aren't looking too good. Any suggestions for cleaning and shining, other than paint?????

Ron, IMHO no amount of polishing is going to remove the rust pits. Short of re-chroming, proper sanding and painting should make them look real nice-like.

And BTW Ron, my professional opinion is based on the fact that rust came from the state of Michigan and it's a much meaner and tougher rust than you have there in your state of Misery.

I faced the same predicament a few years back. Tried scrubbing, brushing etching, burning, rubbing, polishing, grinding and then some. No Good.
Took them to a Chrome shop, where they quoted me too much to restore them.
Much cheaper to buy new ones. With a little care, they will last better than the originals. Those hub caps are not good quality, I was told. Not worth messing with.
Get some new ones, and a lazy susan. Center the cap on the lazy susan, spin it and apply a pair of thin blue pinstripes to the outside. Looks cool.
Well, I ended up painting mine, putting the stripes on,a nd then throwign them away. The solver paint was a bit too much of a compromise for me. Liked the naked wheels better.

Ha! The most caustic stuff I know of for cheap chrome is ... dog pee-pee.

I noticed baby moons arent that espexpensive, but I have these for free, and just want them as 'stand by' hub caps until I polish the Safari. THEN I'll buy me some shiney ones. Good to know it's not worth the effort. I'll just sand em down and paint them for now.

The problem was not teh surface rust, but the fact that the chrome was gone once the rust was removed, and some areas were pitted beyond repair, like you can see light through it.

Ron, use a wet Brillo pad to get the rust off, then put a coat of wax on them to help slow down the return of the rust. I have done this on ours, and it worked reasonably well. I didn't have a digital camera when I did this, but take my word for it, they were nasty. They are now almost presentable.

These are in the original condition as I found them..
You notice the wheel?? It's also original but nasty looking..
Right now, my priority is to get the new Astrodome project finis..
