Grease seals - is there an "in" and "out" side?

Can seals be installed either way, or is does one particular side have to face in towards the axle and the other out towards the bearing?

The side with the lip and visible spring goes in towards the grease (inside of the hub):

Thanks guys and Dave, thanks for the vid. I have cleaned and greased the bearings, in the past, but my current seals are a bit different and I wanted to make sure I put them in correctly.

OK, so I have attached photos of the seals that I have (obtained from an AS dealer). Now, which side goes in, which side goes out, as you can see, you can't see the spring as both sides are sealed. They pretty much look the same from each side to me. Sorry I didn't explain my dilemma in more detail in my earlier posts.

You must look at the rubber lips.

BTW, here is the seal from Out of Doors Mart. I think it is a pretty common seal, with an AS part # I believe. However, unlike some seals, both sides are sealed.......seal, sealed I think I am going nuts.....I know I am being retentive about this but I want to make sure I do it right as I am planning on installing a set of self adjusting brakes/backing plates when the weather breaks.

Thumbs up

This is the best photo I have....

Looks most like the first photo in your previous post, flattest metal side up.

From what I can tell in your pics, the left pic shows the inside side of the seal.

Thanks R, with that and Roberts info I think I can get it straight now! LOL Makes sense that it is the flat side.

Don't know if you have the answer to this, but why are some bearings open on the spring side (which makes it easy to know which way the go in) but others like this one closed up? Does it make it a better seal?

I get the same seal at AS no numbers or markings on it. I know they come in a bulk sleeve and I think they are made in Germany. Just curious if anyone knows who the manufacturer is and do they have a number other than what AS gives them as a part number? Jst finished doing the bearing repack the other day, almost time to head to the Keys.

The closed unit is a double lipped seal....

I just repacked all of my bearings and replaced all of my grease seals ordered from AS. I had an RV dealer in Salt Lake City do them 3 years ago and they used the cheaper single lip/spring seals, and 3 out of the 4 were crimped on replacement. Didn't seem to hurt anything, but the factory AS seals are much better quality and are made by Timkin. I also replaced the front brakes while I had the wheels off.

Just as an update, that also shows the installation of a grease seal along with installing the bearings etc. I think might be a bit newer than the one Dave posted a couple of years ago as the video quality is much better. Just FYI and FWIW.
