Did I screw up on this purchase?
I have a 1973 Safari 6 lug, and I measured my wheels after i made this spontaneous purchase, and they are 16". i purchased a set of (4) 15" wheels and tires from a 2005 safari from ebay. i really liked them and thought if they wouldnt work i should be able to re-sell them! but i really hope they will work. here is the link for the wheels. thanks to all in advance for any input!

I believe your 73 AS came equipped with 15 inch wheels when new...
The 2005 alum wheels should fit fine on your AS - I don't believe the pilot hole has changed...
How are the axles on our 73? Have they been changed? I had to install new axles in our 78 due to age - the rubber rods inside the beams had hardened over the years an no longer articulated properly - new axles got our 'baby buggy' ride back - the only way to go!
If you have to replace your axles, you can insure you get the proper hub/drums that fit you new alum wheels...

Ben you should be fine. Your 73 was originally equipped with 15" wheels.

I bought our axles from Inland RV out here on the 'left' coast...check the forums here, there's tons of info about axles, and you are far closer to the axle mfg's in the mid west...
They are easy to change, I posted some info when I did ours - you do them one at a time, with the trailer up on some 8 inch ramps for clearance underneath, etc...check the forums...

Very good purchase Ben. Like I told you last night when we talked, I thought your tires looked "big". I never noticed they were 16" though. I think you got a good price, too!

bennyg, if your back plates, brakes and drums are still good you can get your axles rebuilt in Elkhart IN for less than $100.00 and if you let them know you are coming they will do it while you wait.
Or the price I was quoted for two new axles with brakes in 2008 was $600.00

Since it's been two years since you had your axles rebuilt, and there seemed to be a question about the limited travel on the torsion arm, can you give us an update on their performance? Have you completed your interior work and travelled with the trailer? How much travel was there in the torsion arms after completing the interior work? Thanks.

Dont put off the axles if you want OEM. Call Andy at Inland RV and set it up. You can pick up the axles at the factory.I did. But you must act quickly because at last report Henshen/ GKN is due to close the Jackson Center,Ohio plant by the first of the year. Then you will be forced to go with Dexters. I have no presonal experience with Dexters and Im sure they are a quality axle because Airstream is using them on all new units,but there have been instances of problems in measurements and confusion on what number axle to buy and then there are the holes to be drilled because they are not direct bolt in as are Henshen/GKN.

driftless, There is about 1-1/2+" travel in the torsion arms sense I have complete the interior.
I traveled to Yellowstone from Michigan last year and spent a month there, put about 6000 miles on the trailer that trip.
It towed like a dream, I have no sway control and had no problem with sway, I drive as fast as I can and have gotten up over 110MPH and cruise at 90MPH when I can with out problems. Everything in the trailer stays put and I can see no ill effect on the trailer from the new axles, no sheared rivets.
I travel with the black and gray tank empty and the water tank completely full or completely empty.
I would buy new axle's from from Axis Products Main again, in fact I bought a 1966 Globetrotter this year and had Axis Products Main rebuild that axle.

great idea on the rebuild, Sure saves some $$. MIght have to take mine off and drive up to Elkhart. How long does the rebuild process take?

I pur mine for 76 sov. from Colin Hyde Restorations perfect fit made in Indiana exc.communications, no drilling etc. just bolt up, he has all specs. no"s ex. what you need, he is on forums.

To my knowledge Axis is no longer doing business.
Axles prior to the 60's and 1969 models sticks into my mind, require modifications to be installed.
