I believe that the warranty is 5 yrs. or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. They contain a grease, not an oil. Our 2006 Classic came with Nev-R-Lube bearings.

Talk to Rick Kapsa at Dexter. He is very knowledgable and helpful.

So....what is the expected lifespan? Should the Nev-r-lube bearings be replaced every 5 years?

I just finished the 4th season with our AS. I am planning on replacing the tires and bearings in March 2012 after five years of use. Cheap insurance in my opinion.

Any comments?

You don't state what the milage might be on your unit; however, if you are well below 100,00 miles, then you should not experience any bearing issues. If you have TPMS, then monitor the wheel temperatures as a proxy variable for potential bearing issues. If you detect one wheel that is not in line with the others, then investigate bearings as a potential cause.

It could be just a bad seal / hub assembly. However if the hub assembly got excessively hot there might be the possibility that your brakes on that wheel could be sticking!!
You might want to check this also!!

Report just in from the dealer who was looking at this.

Said that some leakage with temperature changes and use is not unusual with these and that inspection shows that the "oil reservoir" still has oil in it.

I'm supposed to watch it and be sure it does not continue to leak.

I'm not necessarily buying all this but that's what they say.

In response to the question upthread, my trailer has no more than a few thousand miles on it.

No further signs of leaks so I'm guessing that the bearings were overfilled with grease when new.

They are designed for a 100,000 mile service life. So are the sealed wheel bearings on your family car and many light trucks, and they go hundreds of thousands of miles before replacement.
They are pretty much a "use it until it gives trouble" part. When you perform your Spring service, jack up one side of the trailer and spin the wheels, and try to move the wheel in and out top to bottom. If you don't feel a "rumble", minimal grease weeping, and there is no significant play, the bearings are good.

Thanks for the reply. I always monitor the wheel temperature when driving, and will take your advice and will give the wheels a "spin and pull" test.

Looking back over some older threads, I can now update this report having myself personally disassembled the wheel that had this problem.

The leaking oil I saw was due to an unnecessarily generous application of assembly lubricant when the bearings were pressed into the hubs. It looks like the setup grease used when rebuilding engines, and it has a much lower melting point than chassis grease.

Thanks for the update.
My nevr-nevr's still going strong <knock-knock>

PS. shouldn't this thread be in the "Wheels, hubs, bearings" sub-forum?

Difficult Nev R Lube

Anyone have trouble pulling the drum off of the spindle with Nev R Lube's? I was checking my bearings and breaks the other day, the first three drums came off without a problem. The fourth was stuck on and took 20 min of shaking and pulling to get it loose. Once off every thing looked good. Going back on was just as difficult.

Anyone carry a spare drum and bearing?

There are some other threads on this. I've pulled drums and haven't had them stick.

Given the cost, size, and weight of a bearing and drum assembly, and the relatively few reported failures, I don't carry a spare. Some of the boat trailer crowd complain about nev-r-lubes but that's an application where they're immersed. Overall I think they've proven to be fairly reliable.

I carry one spare bearing....not a whole hub assembly. There's a shop with a press on every corner (ok, every other corner).

Rapping the drum with a 2x4 or deadblow hammer can break free the bond.

Did you back off the brake shoes before attempting to remove the drum?

Yes, backed off the brakes. The bearing and spindle are very tight.

Not likely but the bearing could of locked and the inner race welded itself to the spindle.

I carry a complete hub with bearing and a separate bearing. I realize it's overkill. Our last trip was over 8K miles so I justify it. Pulling a 27 FB with an F350 diesel, weight really isn't a concern.

Last time I needed to find a guy with a press, the corner was 75 miles away in northern Minnesota.

I also had to order the bearings and make two trips to the nearest (but not near) town. They gave me the wrong washer and I had to find a guy with a reamer, but he was 1/2 a mile away. Why don't these things happen when you're home or in view of a wheel bearing emporium?

And I still don't carry spares with me. I figure it happened once to me and the next time will be someone else's trailer.
