Balancing: Centramatics versus Dynabeads

After replacing my brake assemblies with Dexter NevRJust and installing new Maxiis tires, we want to add balancing to our wheels. It appears that adding Dynabeads to four wheels would cost about $50 and Centramatics will cost $200. Would like feedback from users of both systems on the advantages and disadvantages of this choice.

Dynabeads are a one tire usage.

Centramatics last forever. Nothing to wear, nothing to guess at, nothing to weigh, nothing to change from the inside of one tire, to another.

Dyna beads, different story. How much is correct? How much is too much or not enough.

Changing tires? You must remove the beads from one and install in another.

As with most things that are good, better and best.

The choice is yours, for your reasons.

Hi, my personal opinion is to buy and use Centramatics on your trailer. I was going to buy a set for my tow vehicle and my wife's car [BMW X-3] but Centramatics aren't made for the BMW. So Dyna beads might be the choice for her car.

The Centramatics are probably a great product, but installing them might be an issue on my trailer. What if you have no studs on your drums? I don't have lug nuts, I have lug bolts.

Hi, I don't see any problem with them fitting, but to install them I would buy or make threaded studs [three] to hold everything in alignment so you can start your lug bolts. Install three lug bolts and remove the studs one at a time while installing the rest of your lug bolts.

One solution is double-sided tape. Three small pieces would hold the balancer in position until the wheel could be mounted.

Rich.

Easy solution to your worry.

Use double sided tape to stick them on the back side of your wheels.

Easier than chewing gum.

there may be issues using beads OR c'matics on the bimmer...

for trailer applications where the RIM offset is zero, the plate is pretty close to center line and balancing is reasonably 'centered'

but for ANY rim with much offset the plate will be OFF center and so too the balance.

for wide/low profile or even mildly PERFORMANCE tires/wheels this will be an issue.
_________

putting beads inside low aspect tires might be a problem too.

since they would need to spread laterally as well as longitudinally to help with balance.

that is the only issue with the DRIVE tires, but what about the STEERING tires?

every bit of steering input will result in a shift of beads...

and again for low profile/wide tires and rims with significant OFFSET this is an issue.

i also have concerns about how beads MIGHT alter tire temps and pressures....

with LOTs of stop/go/stop/GOGO/turn/go/stop/go, the beads will be FLYING around inside the tire heating UP the air and water inside...

that continuous CHANGE in grip/acceleration/turns/stops isn't happening in MOST trailer tires.
___________

trailer tires aren't at the vehicle corners and aren't subject to slip angle forces or rotation around an axis is 2 directions...

on motorbikes the tires have a ROUNDED profile and the wheels typically ZERO offset,

and bikers TILT the tires when cornering, so beads shifting isn't an issue....

same with big rigs.
____________

does the bimmer have INTERNAL tpms?

i would not want beads MUCKING up the valve stems/sensors that are INTERNALLY located by OEM vehicle makers.
____________

it's important to keep IN PERSPECTIVE why we are using continuous balancing on trayla tires....

1. rotating trailer tires isn't easy

2. many shops cannot CORRECTLY balance trailer rims (lug centric vs hub centric)

3. trailer tires tend to SIT more so flat spotting is an issue as is HIGHER air pressures associated with towing...

4. SOME OLD TRAILERS may have extremely OUT of balance hubs...

4.1. but i don't not believe there is MUCH (or any) evidence for this issue in newer hubs...

OR disc brake running gear.

((where is the proof/evidence/data on HOW MUCH out of balance newer hubs really are?))

5, so using beads OR plates ADDs to or IMPROVEs on the balancing of trailer tires/wheels...

6. it is NOT a substitute for having them properly balance when tires are initially MOUNTED...

7. in my view they prolong that original balance and offset minor changes associated with tire wear.

8. but they are NOT a panacea for all tires on all rims on all vehicles.
__________

i would be especially careful about using EITHER on low profile tires/rims or on SPORTY cars where steering matters...

OR on rims with significant (any) + or - offset.
__________

for a SINGLE axle 'stream, consider liquid LATEX tire sealants...

not only do these products fill small leaks and offer protection for nails/screws and so on....

the LIQUID moves and offers some of the SAME balancing dynamics of BEADS...

cheers

We would like to hear from any Dynabead users who would add your experiences to this choice?

I just placed an order for Dynabeads (100oz) That is enough for the Airstream (six wheels), The Model A (4 + spare), my wife's Honda minivan, and our TV otherwise known as my F150. I also ordered the regulator and hoses for a Nitrogen fill setup from them. I will post once it is all installed/filled. Our next schedule tow for the trailer is up to Springstream in North GA on 09-11APR10.

Hi, Basically the proof is visual to me; Unlike any automotive brake drums you or I have ever seen, There is absolutely no evidence of any kind of balancing done on these drums. No grinding, no drilling, and no welded on weights; All of which are commonly seen on automotive drums. As for the actual amount of imbalance, that will remain unknown.
Note: some big rig drums are not balanced, per se' but they are fully machined, inside and out. Thus true in size, not as cast.

Anyone have a favorite static balancing jig that is currently in production?

I found this one googling around:

Pulled our 34' Excella 3 hrs to and from Springstream. It went very smoothly with the Dynabeads. When I ordered the beads, I also purchased a Nitrogen setup. Since I had to deflate each of the six tires to install the beads, it was a logical time to switch to a Nitrogen fill at the same time.
