Are all bearings equal?

I have a 1954 FC and would like to buy an extra set of bearings to put in my emergency kit. Is this something I can get at Auto Zone, Kragen, ETC...? Is there a data base that lists the types or part numbers?

There was a variety of bearings used, back then.

The only safe way is to get the numbers off of the beasrings that you now have.

Other than that, it's a wild guess.

Those parts are not for a 1959 Airstream, but they are for newer coaches.

Typically the bearings or rollers and the race are made of hardened steel. The cage can be steel of plastic depending on expense/design/preference. As long as the bearing has good grease and the pre-load is set correctly you will have long service life.

To obtain a set that isn't going into service make sure it has good coating of grease to keep moisture off of it. The moisture will create rust and when the emergency occurs the spare that you had thought was a good idea may not be up for the job. Or just pack that bearing set, wrap it in waxed paper and put in a tub like Tupperware product.

Most bearings in service can be obtained at local sources. Sizing can be done visally. If the emergency occurs in very remote areas AND the spindle is not damaged, your emergency kit will serve you. However most bearing failures for light duty vehicles occur because of improper servicing. (Repacking) Because of the better grease and seals available in the last couple of decades many automotive applications have gone to sealed bearings. So careful repacking methods (meaning very clean conditions) will yield service intervals on your exiting bearings such that you should never need an emergency set.

There should be some industrial bearing outlets in your town. Look in the phone book under bearings. They will have what you need.

Roller bearings and ball bearings are standardized. Next time you service your bearings copy down the bearing numbers and grease seal number or take them to the bearing shop. They will have new ones in stock.
