1969 Globe Trotter wheels - how to know?

I'm about to order a new axle for my 1969 Globe Trotter. The present wheels require an axle with six lugs. Should I order the new axle with six lugs or with five. What will give me the greatest selection of wheels in the future. I realize if I order with five lugs I will need to get new wheels right away. The trailer I bought had no hub caps at all and undistinguished wheels. Is it likely that popular hub caps such as those half moon type I see being sold on ebay will fit my wheels? Let me expand this question to include instructions on how I know the wheels I have are original with the trailer and if they are the proper size and correct load carrying capacity

wheel choice

I'd get a heavy duty axel with 12 inch brake drums. The ride will be smooth. That will place you in a 6 lug wheel choice. Your wheel dealer should be able to get you the hub caps to fit. If not, watch out....they come in at least three diameters and you could become a hub cap collector (like me.)

look here for wheels

http://www.trailertiresandwheels.com/

I installed a dexter 4500 lb axle with 12" brakes, 22 degree down angle, 6 lug on 5 1/2 center (I think). You will need zero offset wheels in either 15 or 16 in rated at 2900lbs. Tires should be an "E" rating. There is a better selection of tires in the 16"

Wow my 1966 Overlander has 15 inch dia wheels. I didn't know the GT came with the bigger 16" wheels.

Instead of focusing on wheel size for the axle decision, I would focus on the axle function. The axle and all of the parts attached are what keeps the coach from contact with the ground. When stationary and when moving. Get the 12" brakes, beef up the weight capacity of the axle and get wheels and tires that work. There are plenty of choices in 15" and 16" dia rim size for wheels and tires.

No they come with 15", I was probably not clear, but there are more tire choices for the 16" rims

Tires

"E" tires are not recommended by Airstream.

They are like "fork lift" tires when in use.

Using them is a guarantee of metal fatigue, over the long haul.

Airstreams love a soft ride. Destroy that soft ride, and you will destroy the trailer.

"E" tires, excessive rated hitches, super heavy duty tow vehicles, all or in part, over time, destroys the trailer.

Then, hell breaks loose, when the repair bill is submitted for payment.

Keep the soft ride.
