negative offset moves the centerline wlightly inwards, while positive offset moves the centerline of the wheel slightly outward, this in relation to the hub face.

I just came back from a 12,000 mile, 3 month trip to Alaska on my new 16" Michelins. What a joy. No problems, no constantly topping off the air pressure (they held just fine), not even a lot of wear. I'm glad I made the switch. Most of all, I wasn't constantly worried about having another belt separation.

16" Michelins Replacing 15" Goodyear Marathons

We put new Michelin LTX MS 225/75 R16 Load Range E on our 2008 Safari today, replacing the original Goodyear Marathons and 15" wheels. Cost installed was $188 per tire plus sales tax tax and NC 2% scrap tire tax. Installation included mounting on the new rims, computer balancing, and mounting on the trailer. Total cost of the 16" LTX MS tires was $1022.25 for five. This was done at an independent tire shop in North Carolina. Unfortunately the tire shop couldn't adjust the Airstream spare tire carrier to fit the new 16" spare so I have a future weekend project.

For aluminum wheels I purchased 5 Sendel T03 66655SM 16" zero offset rims for $112 each or $560 for 5. These are like the Eddie Bauer wheels except they are silver machined instead of black machined. I bought them from Performanceplustire.com who delivered them to my door in 4 days with free freight.

Total for the tire and wheel changeover from 15" GYM to Michelin LTX 16" was $1582.25 less whatever I recover selling the old 15" wheels. Pictures of old and new appear below. The first picture is of the original factory tires/wheels. The second and third show the new wheels/tires. I look forward to getting them on the road next week traveling to Canopener 2012.

Jackson Center 16" wheel/tire prices

Thought I would pass along some information for those considering changing over to the 16" wheels and tires like Florida 55 did. We liked their's so much, we drove our newly acquired 25' Safari over to Jackson Center to have them install the same equipment on ours. Our Safari had the original GYM's (06 manufacture) which we obviously wanted to replace immediately, and the time seemed right to make the switch.

JC currently has a discount on labor and parts, so we ended up purchasing five 16" wheels and mounted Michelin tires for around $370 each, which was cheaper than I could order the wheels on line and purchase tires locally and have installed. Plus I had factory techs to ensure they fit properly, and the spare did fit the carrier without modification.

We were within a day's drive when we purchased our trailer, so it was not cost prohibitive to drive over to JC. While there, we had some additional work performed, met some great Airstream Service Center employees and toured the plant. Really a good experience. The wheel/Michelin combo looks and tows great.

We sure appreciate all the guidance from Moosetracks, Florida 55 and the rest of you folks. Like my Daddy used to say: "if you gotta go through a minefield, follow somebody".

Just to update some pricing on this thread, you can get the Michelin LTX MS 225/75 R16 Load Range E tires from Discount Tire Direct for $202 each. Shipping is free.

The Tredit T03 wheels that are the ones used on the Eddie Bauer edition trailer run about $100 each directly from Tredit. A 16" steel wheel for a spare (that looks exactly like the one supplied by Airstream in the 15" size, runs about $49. Shipping for me was just over $100 for the 5 wheels.

When I was having a tire repaired last week, I asked for the price for that same tire at Kal Tire in Kingston, Ontario.

He quoted me C$190 each installed, but claimed that the tire was not suitable for my 1974 31' Sovereign.

When I asked why, he said that it was basically a P (Passenger) tire, and not up to the load of my trailer.

I was not impressed. First time I got what I considered dodgy advice at Kal Tire.

Hmmmmm..... that is a light truck tire. The same model 15" tire with the XL connotation at the end of the sizing alpa numeric, is a P tire with Extra Load capability.

Well, I asked for LTX. Perhaps he misunderstood me...?

Did he understand that it was a 16"? Some tire stores will fight you on the LT tire on a trailer as well....but he shouldn't have confused it with a P metric tire at any rate.

4,303 miles total over our trip to southwest Utah, on the new Michelin LTX/16" T02. Not a single issue. 78psi when we left, 78psi when we got back- never added air.

Yes, he pointed out that there wasn't a 15" version of the Michelins, so he was looking at good data for some of the conversation.

Had I really been interested in getting new tires, I would have made notes and checked up on what he was telling me, but it looks like that will be a couple of years off, thankfully.

Aage,

It seems that they are putting P tires on light trucks—that's what came on our Tundra in '07. The difference between LT and P tires is getting blurred. I tell them I want LTX and that's what I get.
