I am considering one of the two 15" aluminum rims pictured with 0 offset and wonder if the Centramatics will fit. My first set of Centramatics would not fit the steel wheels I have on my '86 Sovereign and my next project was to replace 3 brake assemblies, 3 new Dexter drums, 4 aluminum rims, 3 Maxxis D rated tires. Does anyone have the aluminum rims purchased from Trailer Tires and Wheels - trailer tires, boat trailer tires, trailer wheels, boat trailer wheels, aluminum trailer wheels site and Centramatics?

I have used the top wheel from tiresandwheels.com as well as uwe, C_Ferguson, and the Vap Ambassador. I think they are excellent wheels and look great.

I like the look of the bottom wheel. I have not used this wheel or the Centramatics.

I am trying to decide if I want to stay with the 15" tires, probably Maxxis to match the one I had to buy in October or 16" rims and the BF Goodrich Commercial TA tires. If I go with the 16" rims, I will probably have to go with a slight offset to bring the tire closer to the frame. There is not much room next to the front edge trim with 0 offset and one inch taller tires (1/2" closer to trim). I'm wondering if the Centramatics would fit better with the 16" aluminum than the 15" aluminum rim in either of those styles.

David--I ordered wheels identical to your 1st selection through an Airstream dealer. They were manufactured in China. Out of the 4 I got, 2 of them did not match each another. Apparently they were made in separate factories which didn't use the same specs. It was very noticeable. Valve stems cut in at different angles, those little holes cut in different sizes. I sent them back.

Same company, HiSpec Wheel & Tire out of Mishawaka, IN.

I'm seriously considering going the 16" wheel route with Michelin XPS Ribs. I spec'd my new axles with 30deg starting angle to gain more clearance with the front of the wheel well.

Let us know what you decide.

While I agree that they look sharp and can save some weight, aluminum wheels can have a downside. It has been my experience that after a few years ( 5 or so) they can develop slow leaks. I have had fewer problems with steel wheels. I am relating my experience with cars and trucks I purchased used and my location in Michigan where salt is used on the roads in winter. Perhaps that is the difference and would not effect a trailer. But, at least for me, steel is more reliable.

If it's any help, I used my 15" Centramatics when I switched out to 16" steel rims and they fit much better.

Yes, I went with the Michelin XPS Ribs load range (D)

About 2000 miles on-um.

I have a 31 foot 1984 Excella.
I went to 16 inch wheels and tires.
Here is the web site for the wheels that I bought:

The exact wheel that I got was the 0589-7766-1-AA.
It has an 8 MM offset. So did the steel wheels that I tood off.
I have no problems changing tires, plenty of room between brake drum and the fender edge.

With all the trade outs your doing, I would go for the 16" wheels and replace the balancers if necessary.

If your changing out rims go with 16" if they will fit in the wheel well.
I put Centramatics on my trailer that has the original 15" aluminum rims and 10" brakes. Take a look at the photographs on post #53.

Because of the shoulder on the rear of the aluminum rim the balancers could only be turned one way to work with the rims. Then I had to use spacers against the drum and change out to longer wheel studs.
Go with 16" rims and you should not have to worry about these problems.

It was my past experience with the steel 15" rims, the return of my previously ordered Centramatics and your post that had me wondering if the 15" aluminum rim would work with the balancers or whether I had to go to the 16" rims.

While you mentioned that your aluminum and steel wheels were +8mm, do you remember what the backspacing was per chance? The 15" steel wheels/rims on my '86 have a backspacing of 4" of which 1/4" is a turned up lip.

Anyone know the part# for the somewhat standard 15" rims Airstream put on the trailer the last few years? I have an '04 and want to pick up a set for all 4 tires.

Ok, I found that I need to talk to Jerry at Centramatics to get the proper fit for an Airstream. Has anyone installed Centramatics onto a new(er) Airstream? I see that some of the older drum based axles needed spacers, etc. I'm hoping that these will simply bolt right up. Anyone know if these are plug and play type mounting on new(er) units?

Depending upon how badly damaged the wheel is, it may be repairable. I recently had all of the wheels on my '75 Cadillac Edlorado restored by a shop not too far from you -- one of their specialties is wheel restoration. The contact information for the shop is as follows:

Thanks Overlander; I'll give them a call. A shop in Dayton can repair the rim, but it's expensive, and perhaps a used aluminum rim in good condition would be more reliable.

I read through this thread because I have the same problem as Davidz71. I have the centramatics, they don't fit. I want new rims, but don't know what to get. I have a price for some chrome ones from Discount tire by my house, but don't know if aluminum ones are better? I think I know what tires I need--Maxxis D load M8008, yes? I just was bumbed when the centramtics didn't fit, but don't want to go through all the trouble of spacers, longer bolts, drilling bigger holes, etc. when I want new rims anyhow. Just am trying not to break the bank completely on this tire/wheel thing! Did Davidz71's work out, or no? Anyone else?
