Which Reese Straightline?

1965 22 safari is listed at 330/3350 and 2001 Toyota 4runner TV max is 500/5000. Considering Reese Straightline kit as it has WD & dual cam. Not sure (1) which weight straightline would be best. (550LB?) or (2) whether to use round bar or trunnion.

Pete, I think the one you choose is best! Frankly, I prefer the trunnion bar setup with the high performance (forged) draw bar and ballmount, and the 550lb bars would be just right.

Hi PeteL,

Check out || REESE PRODUCTS || , select Products, select Weight Distribution, and select the various types to see their capacities.

By the way Reese is now owned by Cequent Cequent Towing Products. I've had great luck with their customer service people at (800) 372-6368.

I prefer the trunion also. When the round bars wear, they can drop out of the hitch. Trunions are easier to take on and off.

Definitely I'd go with the Trunnion style, for more ground clearance.

I've got a new setup with 600# bars, but i don't know of a truck going your way that wouldn't cost more than buying them new from your local dealer.

Send a message via Skype™ to uwe
I have been running a Reese Dual Cam HP for about 2 years, and frankly, I am no longer a fan.
I am using the round bars, but I doubt that the performance would be any different with trunnion style bars.
If I was to buy another WD/sway control setup, I would probably go with the Equalizer system. All my friends that have them really like them. None of theirs show as much wear as my dual cam HP, and they don't have big bolt holes on their frames, either...
Both of the cams have worn considerably, and the round bars have worn heavily into the hitch head. I had problems with it when it was brand new, and received service and replacement only after considerable efforts with their so called customer service. Sorry to say, but I'm over it...

Thanks for the input. Sounds like 600# & trunnion is way to go.

Reese short term experience

After reading the posts to this point, I have two comments.

I don't have enough experience with my Reese as Uwe does. I have an equalizer and although they are easy to set up and tweek, I could never dial it in correctly. I think I have a lot of tongue weight to distribute and the equalizer doesn't seem to handle it well. When I talked to their so called customer service the guy only wanted to blame my tow vehicle rather than help me solve the problem. The problem is I have two tow vehicles and they both had similar problems. I was not impressed.

I have ran my Dual Cams less than 1,000 miles but I love the handling, can't comment on the longevity Uwe commented on.

Second the options available can be rather confusing. I think Uwe has the bolt on High Performance Sway Control, I have the sway control secured with U-Bolts. I drove through the Melbourne Land Yacht Harbor and couldn't find and HP dual cams so I figured people felt uncomfortable with drilling holes in their frames. In addition to different styles, the company that makes Reese also owns Draw-Tite and other brands so you can buy the same set up made by different companies. Even though I was told they are all the same product you can find differences in pricing which allows you to shop around a bit.

Uwe, I've never had a round bar system, so I haven't any experience to share there, but I've used the trunnion bar Dual-Cam system with both the old style, and now the newer straight line cams for over twenty years, and never experienced any of the symptoms you describe. I have, however, heard Equalizer owners complain about difficulty of use and un-quiet-able noises.

Sorry to hear your Reese seems to be a problem!
