The four I hit were all after sunset/early morning and didn't see them until the impact either. Have seen many others and was able to swerve or brake enough to barely miss them. One brushed the side of our new car and I was just sick, but got home to find no damage.

Cheryl hit one in early morning darkness head on, minor body work because she was quick on the brakes.

Believe those yellow jumping deer and elk signs beside the highway. I was driving on a two lane highway late at night in the high country in Arizona and a little ways past the elk sign came upon a herd on the road. I saw the eyes from the car headlights before the bodies and hit the brakes. They were vehicle conditioned and did not move off the road quickly (not hunting season). They are big enough to total a vehicle hitting just one of them.
