WD bars uneven load - equalizer hitch

Hello

I have an equalizer hitch...

When I put tension on the bars on side seems to be tighter than the other one. Meaning... I raise the hitch with the truck connected. I have to raise it enough untill I can 'slide' the first bar on...

One bar just slips on, the other bar needs more raising to go on.

This seems to be unrelated to the bar I'm using, it's always on the passanger side...

Is it normal that one bar has more load than the other ?

It seems to ride fine... 25ccd, chevy 2500, 1000lb load bars... Quite I while back I went on scales and the numbers were even load front/rear axle

thanks for your input!

Don't know it that is normal during hooking up. But I was told that 1000 lb. bars on a HD Chevy 2500 is too much and one should tow with 750 Lbs. bars for that configuration. Others might chime in with a good technical explanation. Andy Thomson wrote about WD hitches in the first of a three parts series in the Spring 2010 issue of Airstream Life magazine.

Hi, mine does the same thing, on the same side. But I'm OK with it and that little bit doesn't concern me. Once the load is on it, I'm sure it evens out.

Ours does the same thing and it's on the passenger (curbside) also. Maybe once one is on, it changes the dynamics, but that can't be the whole explanation because almost always the streetside goes on first.

Call Equalizer and ask them. They have very good technical support. I have to raise my curb side a little more after the roadside bar is attached.

If one side of the trailer sits lower then the other it might cause this issue. Also if the TV is squatting to one side you might see the same results.

I know if my TV is at an angle to the trailer one side will be tighter then the other, but I doubt that is what is happening.

If your receiver is loose the first side you attach will be looser
due to the rotation of the hitch head. Also, check the bars to be sure
they are not bent. You can turn them over to bend them back.

I think r/toaster has the answer - one bar takes the slack out of the hitch receiver...ours seems to be about the same, however, and don't have your experience...

or...could it be that one of the frame 'L' brackets is mounted in a different hole than the other - making them different heights?

Stranger things have happened...

Hitch Bar level ??

This will always occure with WD bars because no 2 vehicles ever sit the same height on both sides, Hitch head rotation, ground, TV, etc. for the next few times you hook up switch and do the oposite side first and you will begin to see the same thing. As far as 1000 lbs bars they are a bit of over kill "pardon the expression" for that small of a trailer but you can let the tension off a little to avoid damage to the trailer.
Before this trailer I have now I used 1000 pounders on just about everything I towed and just changes the tension as need and never had a problem.

The difference between the receiver size and the hitch head may be part of the problem. I they fit tightly, you'd have a lot of trouble getting them together or apart. But no matter which bar goes on 1st, the curbside bar always has to be higher.

Everyone who has reported on which is higher says it's the curbside (if my memory is correct).

thanks... it's seems like this is normal, so i won't worry about it...

as to the bars... the ride is smoooth... i popped my first rivet after almost a year and havn't broken anything inside... also my truck is heavier than a "standard" 2500, i have two tanks and the fuel alone alomst adds 550lbs... not sure if that matters for the bars... but switching bars would mean a entirely new hitch as far as i know...

thanks !

Well thats the good thing about weight distribution bars, you can change the bars but not the hitch, if you use the same manufacturer.
But if your current set up is doing that good I would not worry at this time, but if you start seeing alot of damage then you might look at changing

I have the Equa-li-zer E2 hitch. I was concerned bout the 1000 lb. bars so I contacted Equailzer and I was informed it was not a problem with this hitch and my trailer. But I was also told that if I wanted - I could purchase the bars from anywhere that sells Equa-li-zer hitchs. I just need to let them know weather it is a Equa-li-zer or E2 hitch.

The Equalizer hitch head is different for different bars—you may be able to get lesser bars, but you might have to buy a different head if you go too far down.

Yes that's what I meant to say... The 600lb bars are skinnier therefore you need a complete new setup

Hi, this is what they state on their site, but to me, it would make a lot more sense if they just made different sized spring bar sockets.

Agreed. I wonder if the smaller sockets are interchangeable? Could they be fitted by using a bunch of washers?
