2air' what does the w/d mean?

When we put our current SOB into the driveway, we remove the spring bars prior to backing in. Is that what you need to do with the haha also? Or do you tighten them, not really sure we could get them any tighter on our current set up.

I will try to get some pictures of our drive, and our current set up, but that will not be for a week or so at least, when we pull it out to increase the pad size for the arrival of the Silver Lining.

w/d (weight distribution) is another name for spring bars...

no, it is never necessary to remove the spring bars on a haha for towing, backing, parking or whatever...

basically, the only time the spring bars are removed, is for issues related to the bushings or grease zerks, like replacement.

and that is covered with pictures WAY back (post 87-97) in this thread.

also see jimclark's excellent installation pix in post # 203.

IF currently removing the spring bars (brand x hitch) before backing into your driveway,

that explains why the tongue/hitch might currently drag...

since removing the bars LOWERS the trailer nose closer to the ground....

download the haha installation and owners manual from their website...

http://www.hensleymfg.com/Documents/...nualmedres.pdf

save a copy to your hard drive and consider printing it too...

give the printed copy to your 'honeydo...

it will answer many of the initial, basic questions.

cheers

my dealer did/does the install at no charge...

at the time of trailer purchase.

2.5 hours is a reasonable time IF they are careful and get it right.

an experienced dealer might finish in half that time.

so it's still 3k$ any way u shake it.

the 250$ is probably money well spent 4 some owners (you and me)...

but many have done the install themselves, so it can be diy....

there is a scary looking OLDER unit on ebay right now...

eBay Motors: Hensley Arrow Weight Distribution Hitch (item 140175981531 end time Nov-14-07 19:24:26 PST)
at 750$, go for it bargin hunters!

cheers

Being a dog lover first and foremost, I cannot help but notice the dogs first. PWD's are very smart and active dogs, as I am sure you know. There are a few that compete in Agility in my area, so I see them at the trials.

Might be worth the cost as a core and have the factory do a rebuild.

Okay, I've re-adjusted the strut rods according to thread-count preliminary to hooking up again next week. Have ordered 4" drop stinger on the exchange program ($195 to be refunded after shipping costs both ways), and the "emergency parts kit" to add to stores I've already accumulated.

I spent some time with Jarrod at Hensley talking about how to identify the W/D bars as to weight rating. Short of pulling them free to check the stamped end that is enclosed (and not having an inch-caliper) I'm assuming that I have the 1,400-lb bars. Replacement cost through Hensley is about $180 plus shipping.

I'm closing in on the $4,000 hitch after original purchase, hitch installation (including lengthening chains and installing a new power cord and break-away switch) and these chnages.

Jarrod mentioned that PUTNAM is now the supplier of the 1,400-lb bars, that, for the most part, EAZ-Lift supplies the others. Mine may be "new" but the serial number indicates that it is pre-Putnam.

Now, more of a question about "linearity", that is, TV-TT alignment. I notice in an earlier thread that you all were making strut rod adjustments and checking them by braking; looking for no movment to one side or another. I've already located a huge parking lot I can use for checking linearity. Any other ideas? (I get it about not making the strut nuts too tight).

2Air, tell me more of what you did on setting yours up. (Yes, I've re-read your posts on this). Thanks.

Pulled the W/D bars and found this marking on end (cap):

65
1000

Also found some elongation of jack-leg connector where the bar attaches (shear pin bracket).

Finally, my "max" w/d bar lift was midway between the lowest and middle mark (2.0" of exposed inner jack barrel).

so they look like the black bars in post #88?

elongation isn't a big worry (like the pix in post #89/90) but ANY signs of fatique/cracking like richL posted in #279 IS an issue.

based on the weight transfer you posted previously i has suggested those were 1k bars.

IF you are gettting new 1400s they will have new brackets too....

and the wt transfer will be much greater, it sure was 4 me.

IF you are getting the 1400 lb bars you may also want new bushings.

my understanding (again back in the 80s posts)is that 1400s might fit into worn 1000 lb bushings, but when new the 2 bushings are slightly different.

cheers

THE PHYSICAL SHAPE IS AS THE SILVERED ONES. THEY ARE EAZ-LIFT PIECES; POWDER-COATED A DARK, DAPPLED SILVER.

elongation isn't a big worry (like the pix in post #89/90) but ANY signs of fatique/cracking like richL posted in #279 IS an issue.

I RE-READ THOSE POSTS, AND THE ELONGATION IS MINOR IN COMPARISON; THERE IS NO CRACKING AND THE TORQUE VALUES ARE GOOD.

UNTIL I HAVE NEW SCALE NUMBERS I WILL ASSUME THAT 1M W/D BARS ARE CORRECT. THE LATEST 1,4M BARS ARE SOURCED THROUGH PUTNAM.

MY HITCH IS OF THE SERIES WHERE THE BUSHING IS THE SAME FOR THE 1M AND 1,4M BARS.

cheers
2air'
Thanks for the help, 2Air. I believe I'm ready to receive that new stinger, install and make any adjustments; check for TT/TV alignment; and get some new CAT Scale ticket numbers.

i've not read ANY reports of dragging, but i'm sure it's possible IF the w/d aren't tightened...
Just to follow up on 2air's comments, since he took my name in vain : We've scraped the bottom a few times coming out of gas stations that have big dips at the entrance, but the scraping is always on the bottom of the w/d bars, which are fairly resistant to serious damage.

99% of the time we have no trouble. I think the few times we have scraped is because we tow with an SUV rather than a pickup. Our receiver is lower than many trucks, and our suspension is softer, both of which make the hitch more susceptible to bottoming out. We've never hurt the Hensley due to a scrape.

hi rich

thanks for the report, you guys have clearly been in more of america's driveways than most...

and their mailboxes too!

mike asks this question...

mike, i've read a few reports of increased wear on the rear tires on triples (with or without a haha)...

scrubbing is greater when backing up and with sharp turns for the triples.

i've not seem much comparing tire wear with vs without a haha....

my own tire wear issue has been resolved (i think) and had to do with one soft tire.

180,000 miles on my goodyear marathons!

so much trailer tire wear is related to inflation pressures and loading and terrain and tire age.

i haven't seen many haha user comments on the topic...

cheers
