tow vehicle with 4" lift

Okay, bear with me because I'm not too knowledgeable on this stuff yet. We've just purchased a 66 27' Overlander. And we're looking for a tow vehicle. We looked at a 91 Suburban tonight that already has a tow package and looks great in every respect except that it's got a 4" lift and sits on 33" tires, so it's really tall. My question is, if we buy this 'burb, are we going to have to modify the tow package in any way to get it okay to pull the 'stream?

If the price is right, my advise as a Burb user myself is bring the Burb

back down to stock ride height, and remove any "off road" suspension

equipment. Stiffer the suspension the harder it is on the trailer while towing.

My 95 has been a great tv, 3/4 ton w/soft ride suspension.

yes,
You should lower the burb 4" and put original tires on it. Towing with a vehicle with a high center of gravity is asking for problems.

...does anyone know what it would involve, or how much it would cost, to de-lift it? I can estimate on replacing the tires.

If it's just a lift kit without any other mod's it really wouldn't be that

difficult. Just remove the kit, and replace w/original components. Would

really have to know exactly whats been modified.

An off road truck shop should be able to help, just don't let them tell

ya that it will tow just fine as/is, it won't. Especially an A/S.

Post some pic's if you can, can the present owner offer any help as to

whats been done.

I can't remember if the '91 burb was independent front suspension yet or not. If it has a solid front axle, then it should be fairly painless to lower it back to stock. If it's IFS, a lot of times it's not so easy. They have to remove some suspension component mounts from the frame permanently. That would be a deal breaker in my mind. Also, include the cost of re-alignment either way!

If the modifications were done for appearance that is one thing. However, my fear with that vehicle would be if it was lifted for off-roading and "stump jumping". Check it over carefully and ask questions before buying. Who was the principle driver and their age?
If all that checks out OK, then return it to the original height and have a nice tow vehicle!

WoW, This Is like a witch hunt!!! A 1991 Sub. with 4" Right, NOT!!!!! Is It 2wd or 4X4 fist!!!! You can run 33'' with a 3" body or just rear 3" blocks!!!! You need to know how, It was lifted fist!!!! I have a 1991 Sub. with a 3" body and 33" BFG and have towed over 20,000 miles with It!!!! Towing with a vehicle with a high center of gravity is asking for problems.
If its a 2wd with 4'' It will still be lower then a 91 sub. 4X4!!!!!! This Is another one of my 91 Sub. and yes I have towed my 34' with it 3000 miles one summer... Chevy's sub. up to 91 and there trucks up to 87 I think all had a wider front wheel base then the rear for stability and tracking. If by some weird reason It is a 4X4 with 4" springs all he way around you are looking at 1500.00 to 2000.00 for a shop to put oem springs back on it!!!!! Dimmer

Thanks everyone for all the advice. After carefully considering all of it, we decided against buying this one. The price is not right, unfortunately, and we have some other tantalizing possibilities on the horizon.

Yeah - what everybody said - it depends

My 2WD with 3" lift and 33" tires is still lower than the 3/4 ton 4x4 it replaced. It tows extremely well - better than stock, I think due to beefier rear springs, improved ride height and steering geometry.

A quality lift (using spindles in the front rather than longer springs, add-a-leaf in rear rather than blocks) should be OK.
