tow chief
i have one too. this is the story i got about it. the guy who built them only built them for a few years and only for airstream trailers. they work really well, and never ever wear out. when he got old, he quit building them and went out of business. nobody picked it up and you cant get parts or anything for them. fortunately, you never need parts. my opinion is they are very good hitches. i never pulled such a heavy trailer with a hitch that pulls this good.

Any pics? Six years after the OP Google finds a patent listing. Searching the Patent Numbers finds all types of self aligning hitches.
Looks like a lot of parts needed to be made to make the things work.
I recall seeing hitches like these in the '70's but didn't pay attention as the pop-up I had at the time could be man-handled onto the ball.

i'll take some and post them soon. it's not pretty, but it is pretty massive. i can barely pick it up and put it on the truck. and it has a neato sway damper built right in. and the ball is upside down.

I looked at the Patent Papers. It's a very cool hitch, being self aligning and self-hitching. Wow! The patent is seriously expired. Somebody should go into business making this hitch. I think it would be a hit, properly marketed.
I also looked at bobnmary's photos. I think if you sand that puppy down and put on a fresh coat of epoxy paint, it'll look pretty good.

New safety chains? When i got it they were attached with "S" hooks, not even welded. At least i have some hefty screw-link thingys on there. After all, if it hasn't come off in 37 years, it's probably not going to come off at all.
