Non-Leaking Grease Gun

Even though I always back off the pressure on the grease gun it still leaks grease when stored. I use it, release the pressure, wrap it in plastic bag, and when I go to use it again the thing is almost covered in grease.

I am tired of having to wipe grease off of the gun before I can use it.

Two questions:

What am I doing wrong?

How can I stop the gun from oozing grease?

Does anyone know of a manual grease gun that does not leak grease when not being used?

OK, that was three questions.

Leaking Grease Gun

This is just maybe an answer to my own question.

I spoke with a rep at Lincoln a maker of most anything having to do with pumping grease.

The rep said that the stuff leaking out of my grease gun was actually water that had separated from the grease, and it was impossible to stop the stuff from leaking.

Most any grease will separate over time - grease in a 50 gallon drum, tub, or a cartridge like those used in a manual grease gun.

He said manual grease guns leak - get over it.

I am going to look at or buy a Hensly hitch today. They claim it was used one time and then stored for the last 8 years. What should I be looking for? Is there a list to check to know if it is all there? What would I look for to tell how much whear there may be?

Phil,

If you haven't seen the owner's manual there is a lot of good info here.

http://www.hensleymfg.com/pdf/Hensleymanualmedres.pdf

Ware...Look at the weight bars where they insert into the head, A ware ridge would indicate lack of lubrication. Send Hensley the serial # and they can give the mfg. date.

Good luck, keep us posted.

I got it! Looks like it was barely used. Unfortunately it must have been stored outside for period and it is sun faded and some surface rust. I think I am going to clean up the head, repaint it and see if I can sell it. I was considering using it but I am towing with a Dodge 3500 and using an airsafe hitch. I am afraid the hensley may damage my trailer with my stiff suspension

Phil,

If you are satisfied with the sway control, the Air Ride is very important with the 3500. Glad you got the Hensley, good luck.

The HAHA serial number will gauge its age. Mine 8332 and was produced in 2006.

The number I see is 04421 I am not sure if that is the right number or not? Is it stamped or imprinted in the steel?

It really bugged me to have to reset the weight bars every time I gassed up, so.......

This should keep the little buggers from unloading.
