Don't take my initial post comments too serious fellas. I was being a little hyperbolic for literary effect. I had been reading a dizzying number of posts about hitches and someone mentioned "a cracked frame from an HA". Please - nothing exact was meant. I was indicating my state of noob confusion - nothing more.

My sincere apology if that rattled anyone.

I'd like to see some data on the PP spring flex at given loads.....for the day when I have a weak moment an decide to cut loose of that much cash. I actually can't remember any posts criticizing HA no PP (other than worn components after MANY miles and the cost) All of them wear.....that's no big deal.

No rattle here, redwood... you aren't the first person to state but it just never has been shown to me either here at ProPride or during my 10 years at Hensley.

About the only real "complaints" I've seen about the HAHA and PP is they are heavy. Oh, one forum member said they were bad because somebody might steal them. Of course, given the "heavy" complaints, any would-be thieves should be easy to spot at the ER sporting thrown-out backs and hernias.

ProPride comments. My 2 cents. I have a brand new 28' Int'l, delivered on 1 Nov. I bought a PP from Sean -- who determined which bars I'd need based on my trailer and TV. ODM in Colfax, NC installed it -- they'd done many Hensley's but my PP was their first install. They loved it. I've taken two trips. Simple to hitch or unhitch. As it pivots, you don't have to be absolutely precise backing into it. Flip the two cams, drop in the pins, crank in the weight distribution (ODM helped set this up for me and marked an optimum position for me), safety chains, breakaway cable, walk around, pull chocks...gone. In terms of "rough ride" -- nothing in the trailer moved, no sway going through NC mountains. Maybe I'm too new to know what I don't know -- but there's no way I would "cheap out" on a hitch with my Airstream. For my $, I see the hitch as a key and critical safety component. I'm a lot more concerned about what I read on this forum regarding my OEM tires than any other single factor.

how many A/S'rs does it take to hitch up?

here is a simple test for everyone on and/or following this thread: What is the correct torque reading to tighten a 2-5/16 (10-12,000lb tow ball) ball to the hitch head? And, please show me the torque wrench you use to obtain such torque readings. If this test is passed, they ought to be able to hitch ya up just fine.

450 ft.lbs. But no one ever seems to worry about it, they'll just use a common air-powered 1/2" impact wrench (where the value quoted is the tool max).

Curious as to how it's a recommendation though.

That's exactly how I do it. I do mark the ball and hitch head and look for any change in relative position on a daily basis.

MY Equal-I-Zer manual page 11, 450 Lb/ft. Hitch rotated in helper truck, jack stand is steading the pipe wrench. The wrench is about 42" long.

Got to have a bit of fun sometimes, don't we!

That is a real TQ wrench . . wish I had other reasons to justify one (or maybe I'm getting too old).

On that note, have of late seen some oil refinery "wrenches" that are well-past impressive.

Its rated 600 Lb/ft with a live pointer and a follower pointer. You can set the follower to a torque spec on the dial and pull to it or pull till you hurt and see what the value is.

Come on up to SC, we'll torque yours and kick some Dodge tires with MANUAL transmissions! I like clutches.

I can tell I would enjoy that. Even have two pair of hip waders so we can both start off on the right foot, ha!

The OP has another thread on the same subject ("Husky" in title). He might like your take on using the EQ hitch (if opinion not already given above).

Have the 250 #/ft nuts given you any trouble?

REDNAX,

I have seen OP's other thread and posted my desk opinion on the Husky. He has a real "question" in his head, which hitch is best. I've watched some doozies on that one here on Air Forum, discussion and opinions are good, it helps.

I do have one last (?) thought on the hitch, learn how to install and set it up YOURSELF. Get some help if req'd but learn how it sets up. When you are wondering if its right, if you have the hands on skills to set it up, I bet you'll take more time and review and review the setup.

Com'on up, campfire will be ready, cook some beef or HOG and we can put your AS under my backyard carport w/ 30A and H2O and show you a bit of SC and let the stories get going.

Dodges, Cummins, NV5600, AS and I do own Noconna boots too.

Gary

Good question! When the dealer installed my hitch they questioned the 250 torque number. "Wow, that's a lot of torque!" So they called Sean, to verify....and he said, "yup, it's 250." Out of Doors Mart didn't have a torque wrench that read that high, so they bought one and torqued it to spec. Since I'm pretty self sufficient, I went out and got one myself, as my torque wrench only went to 150. I always go to the Oscar Wilde quote, "cynics know the price of everything and the value of nothing!" The value of the right torque on the hitch is as important is the wheel lug nuts as far as I'm concerned

Yes, I'm the "they" that called. I do have Sean's number on my cell phone, though usually the contact has been through the forums here, or email.

I had found the Tow Pro guys in the Yellow Pages, so they are on my list to call. But if Sutton has the Reece 2-cam set, I may just go with them doing it for convenience.

Thanks for the tips.
My experience with Sutton was really good. The walk-through was thorough but you'll be coming back here pretty often regardless. The guy who did ours had a three-week-old at home and was a little scatter-brained (understandably) but he hit all the topics and took a couple of hours doing it all.

Bottom line is that I was happy when I left. There's some construction going on around where the lot is right now and it's not totally obvious how to get back out and onto the main road, just tell them that you're not a local and would like to follow someone out if you're not comfortable with doing it yourself.

Equal-i-zer bars too stiff?

Hi, Lets review Andy's chart on spring bar flex. The Equal-i-zer and the Reese 1000# bars had the same flex all the way up to their 1000 lb ratings. The Easylift was obviously weaker, but still rated at 1000#s, and fell right in between the 800# bars. The other bars tested showed quite a bit more flex, but were 800 lb bars. [DUH] And where were the Propride and Hensley bars? Conclusion; This test is/was useless. [my opinion]
