I don't think they are a gimmick. I bought one for my LR4 to pull a 23' CB Bunk. I have the Curt Hitch which is rated at 800 lbs with WD hitch. No, this is not a WD hitch but if you look at the design the weight is transferred to a pivot which then hits the air bag. This greatly reduces the energy transfer to the Curt and TV and the LR4 has air ride suspension that auto levels to keep the front end down, it also has electronic sway control build in. I have read that LR4 is a fantastic tow vehicle and it has won many awards in Europe as a TV. I'll update this thread with some photos and more information after my trip in August.

Since you can bolt any WD with Sway control head to it you can get sway. For instance you can use Blue Ox Sway Pro, Husky Centerline, Equilizer, or Eaz Lift

Respectfully, It's not a gimmick. The original shocker air bumper hitch works really well. It also offers sway options. It absorbs the bumps, bangs, jerks and tugs when towing and filters them through a built in air bag creating a way smoother ride. That being said, it is not designed to work with a WD Hitch. As the dynamics of a WD hitch are very different. I use the Shocker hd air bumper hitch all summer long pulling my 28' racing trailer. I also use one to pull an equipment trailer in the summer and winter. I love it so much, I bought the company.
It your tow rig can handle the weight of the trailer without sagging, you don't need a wd hitch. If it can't handle the weight you generally need to use a weight-distribution hitch OR another option such as air suspension, super springs or the like if you want to avoid having to use a WD Hitch.
Shocker does offer an Air Equalizer for WD Hitches (with and without sway control options) The air equalizer system works with a WD Hitch. However, the air equalizer doesn't work without a WD Hitch as the design of the air equalizer is meant to be used only with a WD Hitch.

I've used the Shocker for a year now, and it really reduces the transfer of energy between the truck and trailer on bumps and dips- I like the product. I guess since you bought the company that explains the aluminum version that was released! I have the red one, which matches absolutely nothing in my color scheme... got a trade in policy?
