Same Equalizer with new t/v ?

Hi folks,

We recently replaced our Tacoma with a new Tundra for more capable towing of our 23FB. The trailer and Tacoma combo was set up with a Equalizer with 600 lb bars when we purchased the trailer last summer. Since the trailer weight and tongue weight will theoretically remain the same, should we still be good with the same 600 lb Equalizer setup?

I've looked at the Equalizer site where they have a selection tool which will select the correct hitch based on gross trailer weight, tongue weight, and cargo weight. It indicates the 600 lb hitch will still work until we go over 200 lbs cargo weight behind the rear axle, (the Tundra payload is only 150 lbs more than the Taco), but since we are newbies with this I was hoping for some input from veterans.

Many thanks.

You should be fine. Just don’t have a lot of bed load behind the axle, as they say.

You may have to change the height of the hitch head due to different height of the TV receiver, but everything else should be OK. It would probably be difficult to get 200# of stuff behind the rear wheels. Also, I find the Equalizer tool to lean toward the heavy bars. It recommended 1000# bars for my Safari 25. After reading on here about stiffness of Equalizer bars, I machined mine down to 750# rating.

Oops — I didn’t mean with the same setup, I meant with the same Equalizer. You’ll probably need to readjust the setup for ball height of the new TV and maybe the pitch (angle) of the hitch for proper weight transfer and trailer leveling.

It will work fine.

I machined mine down to 750# rating.

Do you mean that literally?

Go through the setup process as per Equalizer manual. That's what I did when moving from an F150 to an F250 and it worked out fine.

I reused mine when going from 4Runner to F150. Only head hight change required.

It should work great.

As others mentioned, you may need to change the ball height.

Also, be sure to keep the ball as close to the rear bumper as possible if the drop shank or insertion depth needs to be changed.

Reset the height allowing for one inch of sag and give it try fully loaded. Then if you need more spring bar get the next larger size. the worst mistake people make with hitches is too much spring bar and that equates to trough ride for the TV/TT.

Thanks to all for your replies. We're relieved to hear it should work and hoping we can still fully open the tailgate on the Tundra with the Equalizer properly installed and the trailer hitched up. The gate on the Tacoma just barely cleared the tongue jack.
