Rock Tamers from Cabela's

I'm going to buy a set of Enkay Rock Tamers, based on the recommendations I have seen here. I understand they are available from cabela's at $199.

Does anyone know if the Rock-Tamers sold at Cabela's are the "real" Rock-Tamers made by Enkay? I'm asking because the materials used in the Cabela's are different than the ones advertized by Enkay.

I don't want to find out I bought a cheap imitation.

Here is the Cabela's cut sheet.

And here is Enkay's website.

Opinions?

The Cabela's Rock Tamers look similar, except for the color of the metal and the design of the rod holders. I’d say these are not Enkays.

I bought mine from Northern Tool this Spring. I have used them for 4000+ miles this Summer and I am very happy with them. Though they are heavy, so installation and removal is tricky.

that's interesting mark...

when i first posted the cabela source in 05,

they were exactly the same.

and so were the product descriptions.

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f238...ted-19710.html

so now it appears there is an 'anodized aluminum' version

along with the original.

looks like the flap mounting area of the rods is different too...

i do like the look of the mang/bronze center hub/spindles, now that they're polished.

but the zinc plated steel rods on my set have rusted...

i've been meaning to contact nk about this issue.

since i purchased from them.

IF the new version weighs less, that would be a bonus.

these suckers are heavy!

why don't you call enkay 2 morrow n let us all know....

cheers

Looks to be selling the Enkays

Looks like it is selling the Enkays. I have the Enkays (newest version, as shown in the pic), is a chrome shank that is much lighter than the original brass colored one. I bought mine straight from the mfg. The only think I didn't like was the chrome "rock tamers" on the flaps. Wish it said "Airstream" instead...

I'd say that the Cabelas are in fact Enkays. The photo in the Cabela's photo, the truck has a personalized Colorado that say ENKAY.

so based on bandit's post...

perhaps the new version IS the cabela pic

and nk hasn't updated their web info?

IF the center hub is no longer mang/bronze...

it might be harder to customize (machine) for odd stingers...

others?

cheers

I bought my Enkays from Cabelas last year , these look a little different, maybe an improved model. I have to believe "Rock Tamers " is a trademarked product but Cabelas makes a habit out of selling a name brand and then doing a Chinese knock off of the good product.
Have to say I like the Enkays, go for the real thing.

Hi 2air,

Yes, I bought mine on June 26, straight from the mfg, and actually spoke to Mary, one of the deveopers of the flaps. She did tell me the website was not updated yet, but would be soon. The new "version" was not only lighter, but included the chrome "rock tamer", which is an option on the previous version.

Also, the new version fits on both mid sized, full, and dully trucks, whereas there was a seperate version for dully / non-dully...

cheers

Thanks for the quick and concise answer. I sent them an email with a 12AM tomorrow deadline to get back to me, as that's when I will be at Cabela's

I sure feel better now that I have the facts.

Rather than email, I'd call Enkay - they're nice folks.

And they gave me a 10% discount when I told them I heard about them on this forum and would say nice things. Which I did, and still do. I broke my set in on our AK trip last year.

These work great - the newer lighter models would be a good thing, mine are heavy.

I just wanted to add - Northern Tools were and still are cheaper in price and have a 5% or 10% discount offer in almost every catalog I have. They also have free shipping in November for the Christmas rush so that can be a big savings overall.

2cents worth of comments.......

I got the Enkays from Northern Tools during one of their free shipping specials. They are great. They are heavy. We took a 2000 mile trip in July. The flaps sure got pitted from rocks, etc.

I just got back from Cabela's. The Rock Tamers at Cabela's are the new chrome on aluminum model mentioned by Bandit. They look very strong and lightweight. Good price, $199, same as Northern Tool (their stores are within a few blocks of each other), no shipping.

Very satisfied, thanks for the responses.

with a coupon.

BLACK coated version and without shiny steel plates on the flaps,

but a good price.

the CENTER PIECE is now cast aluminum? then coated with shiny stuff...

so while it is MUCH LIGHTER it may not be as easy to modify as the older brass center piece seen in these threads...

If any of you have thought about Rock Tamers, but have not bought them--now is the time to take the plunge. I have had mine for nearly a year and only wished that I would bought them at the time of my AS purchase-they are well worth the money to prevent stone damage on the front of your AS.

I saw the RockTamers yesterday at Cabela's, and they look like they switched from chrome on aluminum to black paint on aluminum.

I think you would be able to mill out the clearance needed to mount on a Hensley and just touch'em up paint, rather than having to deal with the chrome on the earlier GenII models.

I've been using mine for two years and I'm very happy. I always take the flaps off and turn the hitch over when we unhitch. With a 5mm T-handle ball head wrench it only takes a minute.

I bought mine about three months ago from J C Whitney. I bought the black version because the chrome would have looked funny on my truck with body colored bumpers. I can't tell what the bars are like on the chrome model, but mine are black and coated with the same type of material as on Yakima Bars.
Check my profile picture

Ken
