it'a actually a GLOSS black powdercoat over aluminum, very THICK and so far very tough.
and the 'silver edition is still avaiable, just not the ONsale version.
yes one can mill or grind out, then touch up, even on the black alum style.
BUT with a pp hitch the standard adjustable bar has SPACE for the nks already, built into the design.
and the BLACKS match
cheers

Great observation 2air'
I have sold quite a few sets to customers with 3P hitches and they work great.

Here's a set of flaps that I built. I wanted them attached to the receiver, and not the hitch so I did not have to lift them both at the same time. I learned with a previous set that the combination was just too heavy to handle for an old fat man with a bad back.

Nice job, SteveH.Thanks for sharing the pictures. I've been amassing materials to do something similar. Now, if I can only find it all...

Good looking flaps, if that white stuff is snow & you are in texas they will be worth their weight in gold before winter is over.

Thanks, but the "white stuff" was just the camera being fooled by the late evening sun.
I've built several sets of these things and I seem to get the design a little better with every one I build. The first ones I built were bolted to the bottom of the rear bumper which meant installation with a mechanics creaper. Not too handy.
There is a brake supply place here that caters to big trucks, and they have the rubber flaps for about $8 a piece. The rest is just steel square tubing and angle iron from the box store. I like not having to get under the truck to install and remove.
We used these same flaps, with a different center mount piece that mounted on the hitch, summer of '08 on our Alaska trip, and they are still in good shape, so they are very durable. I mainly have them to stop rocks.
With this latest mounting to the receiver, it allows me to mount the flaps and hitch seperately, and it allows me to remove the hitch without removing the flaps if I so desire.

Hi, SteveH. Nice job, I like it. Now I need to make something similar for my Lincoln.

Small problem really, but the Rock Tamers make our hitch head heavier to handle. Affects me when I'm setting out to tighten ball or side bolts, or moving the hitch head from ball to pin box when it's time to hitch up and go.
But, we like them. After over 35,000 miles on the 25' International and a couple of years of weekends on the 22' International, these are still doing great.
Stuff still gets around these big mud flaps, especially from oncoming trucks.

Wish I could get some. Porblem is on my sequoia the muffler runs straight out the back. When we borrowed our friends AS he had some on his hitch that we used. We just about put a hole through one on a 900 mile round trip to zion and back.

Wow,
I cant imagine what it would take to put a hole in those. I had enough trouble putting the holes I needed in mine. I don't suppose you know what it was. Maybe a Taliban IED.

Ken

Yeah, and imagine what the offending object might have done to the front of the trailer, right through a course of aluminum. Ow!

Hi,
Just purchased a set of Rock Tamers. Have a 2009 Chev Silverado 2500 with Duramax Diesel.
The exhaust pipe comes straight back under the bumper. The end of the pipe is 15 1/2 inches in diameter.
Any suggestions as to how to install?
Thanks,
Bob

Howdy,... on my 2012 Duramax the exhaust aims off to the curb (passenger side) but blasts the corner of the Rock Tamers. I've run it about 800 miles, no issues with heating too much.. yet.
If you have a direct out the stern pipe, I suggest getting a 'turn down' end or route to the side.
