Reese WD bars

My reese came with 1200 bars installed and set up by the dealer, nice job, however, i feel it was an over kill for my 30 ft that i pull with a 3/4 gmc. The ride is harsh considering i pull other cargo trailers in another sport. I have been advised to use 800 or even 600 bars. Now that i bought my reese as a complete set up, where can i purchase just the bars themselves?

I bought my 800 lb bars from etrailer. I had a similar situation, bought new 2012 FC with Reese dual cam hitch that came with 1200 lb bars. After several thousand miles and a harsh ride and a few popped rivets, I switched to 800 lb bars. Much better now.

When I first bought my camper it had 800# bars which I thought were a little heavy, I went to the camper place and asked him if they had 600# bars and he looked around the shop and found a pair and he just traded with me.

Try Craigslist. Type in Reese for sale in your area and nearby towns. The bigger the town the better the odds.

Thanks all, this feed back helped answer my question, have installed a "loaner grunion bars" from dealer, if that smoothes out the ride on the short 100 mile journey home, I will purchase a set.

I am in the process of doing the same change from 1,200 to 800# bars for the 30' FC and towed by our Ford F250 Super Duty - way too stiff.

Not sure how to install mine, going to a Rally this week end. The #800 bars are about 2-3 inches shorter than the #1200. If I learn how to install I will let you know. Cost wS about $150.00

Lugi: The 800# bars come in two lengths. You were sold the shorter length, not an issue. On the A frame of your trailer is the cam bracket that holds the moving end of the bars, loosen the retaining bolt and move the retainer itself towards the ball enough so the bar will fit. And that is it.

An AirSafe hitch will help a lot with those heavy bars. I had the 1,200 pound bars, used them with the AirSafe for a couple years, no problem...this year, however, I did
buy a set of 800 pound trunnion bars, I had to adjust the cam bracket, as these are about 5/8 inch shorter. Anxious to try these on our next trip...

When I got my 27FB the dealer set up my Reese with 1200 lb bars and improperly set up the hitch. After two tows I had two popped rivets inside the trailer. I ordered the 800 lb bars from www.etrailer.com.

Once I put them on there was an immediate decrease in the stiffness of the bouncing at highway speeds over bumps. I no longer had the cushions flying to the floor when I towed. I sold my 1200 lb bars on here and haven't looked back.

Lesson learned, don't trust a dealer to set up your hitch properly.

I have Reese wd bars on my 30' Avion. Should I also have a sway control bar? I have one & the trailer has a ball mounted to it, but I'm not sure if it works against the wd bars. I'm down in Florida & had some pretty bad sway episodes on my way down & used the sway bar. Wonder if I should go up a notch on the wd chain & skip the sway bar. Not excited about my 900 mile trip home!!

I am not a hitching expert by any stretch of the imagination, but with a 30-footer, I think that it is going to be a lot of help to avoid the trailer getting pushed around by 18-wheelers on the road.

Properly set up, I don't know how it could hurt, that's for sure.

It doesn't work "against" the WD bars, it's another, (and different) job for your hitch.

I had a lot of sway with it on, which makes me wonder what is set wrong! I towed 300 miles without the sway bar & had no issues ( when I bought it). I had a lot of wind & 18 wheelers this time, but also had the sway bar on ( for my own peace of mind, I thought!). I got sucked over by just about every truck that passed me. I thought I heard or read that the sway bar actually works against the friction of the WD bars. Was I dreaming that?

Understand that weight distribution has absolutely nothing to do with suppressing or preventing sway. There are hitches that control sway. Reese dual cams are one. ProPride and Hensley are another approach.

I use a ProPride on my 22 foot AS and am convinced it's the only way to go. Others will have differing opinions. I do know that sway no longer happens, and passing big rigs, and wind do not get my blood pressure up, because nothing happens--the trailer tracks properly all the time.

Becky, I would try another notch on the wd bars and really tighten the sway control down - I don't think you can over tighten it by hand. See if that helps.

I've towed my 31' Sovereign almost 60000 miles with pretty much the same Reese set up you have and have never had any sway issues so it should be just a matter of dialing it in.

We have a friction sway and I've noticed it's touchy - a bit too loose, and the sway control is lacking. A bit too tight, and the rig feels like something major is wrong. You'd think it'd be easy to tighten it to the same place each time, but so far I've had a lot of variation even when I'm trying to be careful.

Really, that's the main issue with friction ant-sway systems. ProPride and Hensley work with geometry to prevent sway before it can start.

Still using my 1200 lb bars from my old SOB, a little over kill for our 23fc but with set up procedures followed I Have no complaints.
