Older sway bars

I cleaned and repainted the sway bar set I got with my 66. I have been using the hitch without the bars and my Excursion monsta tows it smoothly. But I am going on a longer trip in June and thought to use the bars.

Any tips on using these things? They insert up into the bottom of the hitch.

Those are older Eaz Lift bars. A little dab of grease on the part that goes into the head will help a lot. You can also use the friction bar that should have come wth them, it should minimize the little bit of sway your 66 may exhibit.

What is cool is I have had no sway even without any bars thus far. Of course having a huge a** Excursion with a 26' 60's trailer helps. I don't have the EAZ friction bar.

So you just insert these bars underneath and turn until locked?

They are not sway control bars. They are weight distribution bars. If your Excursion ride without sway I would suggest you leave them home.

Just as you are about to hook up, while on a level surface, measure and mark a height on your front and rear fender straight down through the center of the whee. Place a piece masking tape on the fender and mark a reference point. Now hook up and rear measure the fenders. The rear will drop. It is the front fender you are most interested in. With out WD it will go up but considering the Excursion's front axle weight if it does not go up more than a 1/4 in. you should be OK. If it rises more than that you should consider a WD system. Your trailer and heavy truck would be fine with 600 lbs bars. Heavier bars will just result in a rough ride for the trailer.

I have recently installed an Andersen WD/sway system. The total cost of that system is less than the cost of the correct bars for your current system and provides sway control. You can see my initial comments at post 23 on this tread.

The photo below may help to illustrate how your hitch looks when assembled. Looking at the hitch head, it appears to be welded rather than adjustable. Depending upon the height of the receiver on your tow vehicle, you may have an issue with getting the weight distribution properly adjusted.

Thanks all. I have had weight distribution bars on two previous 31' Airstreams. They did seem to eliminate any issues towing of any kind and were helpful in an almost collision situation at 60 mph. This trailer is much lighter and 5' shorter.
