Need Lanyard between break away switch and truck
I need a lanyard for the break away switch. Is this anything special or is it just some bicycle cable and some hooks?

I replaced my lanyard with a coiled one that I found a a local RV store. It had a clip at one end to atach to the bolt I installed in my license plate. It looks like the one in this link.

Plastic coated SS cable they sell in bulk cut amounts at Home Depot. They sell the crimp tools and swages there - not to expensive. You will need them again, probably while on the road.

It is a thin 1/8 braided cable that has a clear polly coating. You can find it at ACE Hardwear, they can cut it to length for you! Also buy two aluminum crush rings as pictured.
It should be noted that the safety switch per manufactures suggestion be replaced every 4-6 years!
So if your missing the cable you might opt to buy a new one with the cable...

good photo VINSTREAM, only one change - get the longer swages and leave the loose end inside the swage and crimp in two locations. This leaves the frayed end buried under the swage where it won't bite you on the cold night when you are un-hooking.

I recently purchased the complete Tekonsha Breakaway Switch w/cable, from etrailer.com for $10.99.
If you go this route, disconnect the battery during replacement.

Funny you should say that... this is the remains on a new break switch... I redid it like you explained because I did not like it!

I need a new switch. Mine is old and I don't even know if it works. There is no cable right now so this is on the list for the next trip.
I bet the trailer place where I buy a lot of stuff has them and they are as cheap as online and no shipping fees.

OK boys, I rarely run on all thrusters, so I gotta ask. What is a swage? Is that the little silver thingy that you crimp the looped end of the cable with (to make the looped end)? Again, I'm a few fries short of a happy meal, so some stuff isn't obvious to me.

Well, ok, call it a crimp. I work alot with cables. My guys call them swage and crimps in the same sentence. I asked the same question years ago. Crimps make electrical contact, there is not a working weight load value to them, a swage when properly applied molds the lead under pressure into the individual strands of the cable and should provide a working load value once applied the right way. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
I sure would like a super-sized meal right now, I'm hungry.

Now I get it, it's something of a nautical term. A crimp like device used to join two pieces of cable at the end to form an attachment point (like the loop pictured). Could possibly be used to lower an underwater device off the bow of a ship, for example.

I usually equate swage with expanding something like putting a flare on a piece of pipe or increasing diameter so two pipes can fit together. A crimp would be mashing two pieces of metal together to make them one piece. So if was asked this question on a test I would say swag expands and crimp contracts.
