Hi-Torque Acme power jack

hi, i am a newbie in a '93 Sovereign. Yesterday, when attempting to lower the jack at first it was making a louder than normal sound then quit moving. when we tried the manual jacking it was sporadic in moving then nothing. the motor still runs. all you veteran experts out there, the questions are..is it the gears gone bad? i have no idea how old this jack is, do you think it is worth taking it apart and see about fixing or just bite the bullet and buy a whole new jack?

That happened to me years ago. I took the head off and found a gear with a coupla teeth broken. I wrote to the mfg and they sent me the gears ---- free. Put it back together and it worked great.

The bane of electric jacks' existence are the limit switches. When improperly adjusted, the gears get subjected to too much torque, and fail in short order.

Should you decide to replace sheared gears, make sure the limit switches are adjusted correctly.
