Hensley Weight Distribution

I love my HAHA, and we just got back from FL on an 1100 mile trip, through mountains, with no problems whatsoever. However....

A check of our weight had the tv at 6650 and trailer at 6000. Durango has GCWR of 14000, but we are approaching GVWR with basically no cargo and passengers weighing about 300 lbs. I suspect that all the weight is tongue weight. Any advice on reducing or managing this weight? How about the spring bars? Can they do anything to reduce weight on the tv, or is it just to balance it front to back? We are level and comfortable and safe, by the way. I have also a Hensley brake controller and have added Timbren load boosters.

Umm, I'd recommend upgrading the TV

Other than that, yeah, you need to find some CAT scales and get some weights after playing around with it a little. You're kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place because you are so close to the weight limits on the TV.

I want a vehicle that can tow and be used as a daily driver the other 90% of the time and still fit in my garage. The Durango is fine for now, thanks. Just wanted to ask about the Hensley and its effect on weight and distribution.

the primary goal for the w/d bars is to restore steering axle loads that are reduced from the tongue load.

IF u've done that and the trailer is LEVEL, there are no bar tweaks that LOWER tv weight.

the haha is 100-150 lbs heavier than friction hitches and about 30-40 lbs heavier than a pp.

one could SWAP the steel lp tanks for aluminum and reduce the tongue load 40 lbs that way...

then travel with only partial lp gas fills.

ANYTHING not needed IN the tv could be moved to the trailer.

for example the tv spare tire and jack could go in the trailer, till UNhooked.

IF handling is ok and the tires are properly rated/inflated AND the trailer has good braking AND the combined loads remain under gcwr...

travel safely.

cheers

Are you guessing at a 6000# trailer weight for your 28 footer? Loaded up, ready to camp, you should be closer to 7500#. Also, I don't think that a Durango weighs 400# more than a 3/4 ton Suburban. You probably need to check your weights and make sure that you have them right before making any adjustments.

my interpretation of the 'check of our weights' reference is...

that is rig connected and w/d adjusted.

so the 6650/6000 is WITH the tongue load ON the tv...

meaning 800-1200 lbs of the A frame (and haha) on the durango...

cheers

Hi Todd,

What's the rating on the spring bars you're using?
Are you getting 'sag' in the durango's rear?

It's always been my understanding, you want to re-load the weight to the steer axle AOT 'balancing' the weight...

10-4 Good Buddy.

You must keep in mind that I worked for the US government in one position or another for 43 years. I developed a deep seeded paranoia concerning acronyms, and I'm too old for counseling to stand a chance.

Remember LSMFT?

Regards,
Ken
