Hensley Factory Repair

I have a HAHA that I bought new with my Airstream 16 months ago. I have pulled about 25,000 miles with it. It has always performed flawlessly.

About four months ago, I started noticing that the Hensley receiver was starteing to "round out"; the square was starting to become more rounded. I talked to Jarrod Robbins at Hensley in Michigan and sent him some photos. At that time he told me that this was normal, but to keep an eye on it.

This "rounded effect" became more pronounced with further use. As it did, the Hensley end of the hitch bar was going deeper and deeper into the receiver. I started to become more concerned as the side flanges (lock over wings) got closer and closer to the Hensley receiver. (See Photos below)

As I was already in Jackson Center having work done on Lucy, I called Jarrod at Hensley, and explained the situation with the HAHA. I asked if I could bring it to the Factory for him to take a look at it. He asked if I could bring it to the Hensley Plant in Romeo, Michigan. I told him that I would be there Thurday afternoon (10/25).

We drove the 200 miles to Romeo (from JC). Hensley Plant Manager Dennis LaDuke looked at our Hensley and told us that it definitely didn't look right. He said that he had never seen one with the hitch bar so far into the receiver. Because it was late in the day, he asked if we could bring it back in the morning and he would make it right.

We returned to the Hensley Plant on Friday morning. Dennis and his assistant, Mark, immediately removed the HAHA from Lucy. They found that the right bushing was split. The rest of the unit looked good except for the rounded receiver. They ended up replacing the entire lower unit (giving me a new receiver) and both bushings. They also replaced my 8" drop hitch bar with a 6". I hooked up and was set to go. I spoke to Dennis and Mark at length about adjustments and lubrication to make sure that I had the right information. They were very friendly and helpful.

I have found that Hensley really stands behind their product, and we were very satisfied with their attention to our concerns. They fixed our Hensley. We feel that it is as good as new. (See photos below)

Please note that my Hensley Arrow performed as advertised, eliminating any sway, during the entire period that I have outlined.

Thanks for the informative post and photo's. As to the stinger, did you change tow vehicles or change its' load so as to need a different heighth? I have started with a 2" drop on mine and am considering a 4" (once all other measurements, weights, etc are done).

Thanks.

Hi Moose,

So the factory gave no explanation for the rounded receiver? Lets hope the new one doesn't do the same. Would hate to diagnose what would cause that. Good luck. Great to hear haha factory stands behind their product, and replaced it.

What were the symptoms of a split bushing? Did you notice anything? Guess its a good idea to look at those every once in a while.

Thanks for the post.

I started out with a 2" drop stinger. The trailer pulled level with the OEM GM receiver. The weld broke on the receiver, and I replaced it with an aftermarket ClassV which rides right up on the bumper. This raised my receiver height by about 4". I took it to David Tidmore at Roger Williams Airstream in Texas. He took a bunch of measurements and set me up with the 8" drop. I thought it was pulling a bit low, but everything worked well. When I got to Hensley, they thought that I was pulling too low, and switched the 8" out for a 6".

The Factory had never seen a receiver that distorted. They didn't think that the split bush would have caused that. They have seen split bushings before.

There were no decernable symtoms of the split bushing. The thing always pulled flawlessly. I have no idea how long the bushing had been bad.

Thanks for the reply. I took the time today to inspect mine more carefully as I'm pulling out of Dallas to head down to Rockport on the coast. Tidmore set mine up, too. Great guy, great service. I only gulped once as I wrote the check.
