Help! Need to pick a WD hitch...

Too much information out there! Gotta love the interweb.

Can anyone tell me which weight distributing hitch to buy for a 2005 Acura MDX (Touring, 6cyl, 4500lb tow capacity) pulling a single axle '62 Tradewind (3260 dry weight)?

I'd like to keep it under or around $500, unless more money is much better spent.

There are a couple on Amazon (Camco, Curt, and Reese) that are reasonably priced and ship quickly for free.

Or would the Anderson be the best bet for $500?

For about $400 you can get an Andersen hitch. I have limited experience with mine but it is light weight, simple to install and use, and offers good sway control.

If you decide to buy it, there is a useful thread on this forum what we users have learned about installing it.

I don't know that you really need a WD as much as you could use an anti sway bar.

I agree with Murrey, Anti-sway is more important with your TV & TT.

Also, check your hitch on your TV for proper classification and rating with and with out a WD device.

In that price range I like the Equal-I-Zer first and the Reese Dual Cam second But both are good.

Be prepared to get all kinds of opinions on this one though

The Andersen will give you both WD & sway control in a light weight & easy to set up hitch.

I think these SUV's made today have a spongy suspension so that the occupants are getting a nice car-like ride. With this in mind I would bet that you will find that the WD feature of whichever hitch you decide to go with is a necessity. And with this you would also need the sway control ( unless you go Anderson). When you put several hundred pounds on the rear it will drop enough that you need to transfer weight back to the front for stability and steering.

I went Anderson for my towing. I have not yet installed it so I cannot comment to it's performance. YET. I had an equalizer and it towed well but didn't like the heavy bars to contend with. It was older and the bars slipped out of the sockets on me several times and have been ground down by dragging on the road. That's what brought me to look towards the Anderson.

This is a tough decision. You can't just try it out like you try on a new pair of jeans. And it's expensive too. Trust the advise you will get here on the forum but the decision is still yours to make. I hope you are happy with the choice you will make.

hmm. I bought a Reese dual cam last year, based upon the advice here and elsewhere. Then didn't install it. towed from houston to Dallas. then from Dallas to Taos. Taos to Ft. Collins. Thru some serious mountains.

Hauled the hitch the whole way, and it's been sitting in boxes since I bought it.
I've come to the conclusion that I don't need it.
It might be on eBay here shortly. Never installed.

I bought the Reese dual cam with sway control. It works and is easy to setup.

I hate it.

The noise it makes following turns is enough to drive me mad. It's kinda like having braces on your teeth. You know they are there for a purpose - but you don't like them.

I'll be replacing it with something even if I have to quit eating for a while.

We bit the bullet and got a Propride. Your family's safety is worth the cost. After all you have invested in an AIRSTREAM! We love it. Sway gone, no noises, Easy to hitch! No other choice in our eyes and we have had several other types to compare.

I pull with a heavy truck and a Reese Dual Cam It works fine. But if I were you I would try the Anderson because of the light weight and the reported good sway control. The hitch head for the Reese adds about 100 lbs or more that do not much bother my 2500 but would seem unecessary baggage on a lighter rig like yours. You could carry a generator and a bunch of other stuff with the weight savings from the hitch head and bars.

Just replaced my Reese dual cam with a Blue Ox Sway Pro. I never had a problem with the Reese but, like Dan, the grunting, groaning - snap, crackle pop drove me nuts. Towed 4 hours with the Blue Ox last week on interstate and on country roads where the traffic was running 60 - passed and was passed by multiple trucks with no sway and no push. No noise - no greasy parts - so far we really like it.

Thanks for all the input. After looking into all the options presented, I decided to go big and bite the bullet on the Propride or Hensley. As luck would have it, there was a Hensley Arrow on Craigslist and I went and snatched it up for $700. It looks fine, a little surface rust but all there and heavy as #%@*#! So hopefully it will do what I need it to do, once I get the hang of hooking it up. Lucky I have the backup camera....
