Have You Actually Weighed That Tongue?

Well, I was very curious, so I bought a scale. The best Airstream specs I could find stated a 805 lb. tongue weight for our '10 31' Classic, but that is dry with no propane or "stuff" in the trailer.

I had figured 805 (tongue)+ 220 (ProPride) so came up with 1025....pretty close at what looks to be 1040 +,-

Well done! I've been thinking about buying a Sherline myself. Where did you get yours?

I got it from Sherline. You can use it if you come to Central Texas.

You can also use a standard bathroom scale and a lever. I found the instructions on line but don't know where. I'll look around if anyone is interested.

Or you could bring it with you to Tucson for Aluma Fiesta . Appreciate the offer.

Yes, and I've done that with smaller trailers, and it was kind of accurate, at least compared to what I thought it might be. Wanted more than kind of this time.

The bathroom scale and lever method of weighing the hitch can be found in most of the Airstream and Argosy owners' manuals. The procedure can be found on page B5 in the 2012 Airstream Classic Limited owners' manual in this link.

I had anticipated the weight of my '64 Overlander's hitch weight very closely, but was off by nearly 50% on the hitch weight of my '78 Argosy Minuet. When weighed, my '78 Argosy Minuet 6.0 Metre had a hitch weight of 560 pounds with full fresh water tank and full twin 20-pound LP tanks and the coach loaded for a four-week trip to the WBCCI International Rally (my guess had been 400 pounds for the hitch weight of the Minuet). I was much closer with my '64 Airstream Overlander . . . my guess was 675 pounds with an actual of 750 pounds . . . again the coach had a full fresh water tank as well as full twin 40-pound LP tanks . . . and the coach was loaded for a six-week trip to the WBCCI International Rally.

Discount Code For Sherline Scale

In case anyone is interested, Sean at www.propridehitch.com is currently offering a 10% discount on Sherline scales with the coupon code below.

Coupon Code = AirSherline

I have no affiliation with ProPride other than being a happy customer.

Good discussion, here.

Anything on which JBarca (John Barca) posts is worth bookmarking and several readings. Robert Cross is known to nail things to the wall around here the same way.

I need to call Sean about the adjustable H/A stinger he'll be building, soon, and the SHERLINE is what Santa is bringing this boy this year.

Thanks, SteveH

Thanks, Steve. That's a good price on the scale, but almost $25 in shipping makes it pretty much the same cost as other online retailers.

Shipping SHOULD NOT be that much. It's only 6 lbs shipping weight. That number is calculated directly from UPS. Let me check to see how it is set up.

ON EDIT: Shipping calculation should be better now. THANK YOU for pointing that out! I wonder how many sales THAT has cost me since that product has been added to my site (about 24 months ago).

In an Internet scan, I found that the Sherline scale body is the same for all models (e.g., 1,000, 2,000 and 5,000 pound models). You can change scale ranges by purchasing different dial gauges at approximately $28 each (not including shipping or tax). Then, you just screw in the dial for the range you wish to measure. Readings are most accurate (advertised at 2%) at mid-range on the dial.
