HA Hookup Aid

As a new HA owner, it has taken me a while to get used to just how important the angles are in the hitching process. The stinger and the receiver MUST be in the same orientation vertically, horizontally, and laterally.

To help with this, and to make it easier to see the angular errors, I started using two hitch poles with magnetic bases. On one of them, I put an o-ring to function as a height measure.

I first set the o-ring to the height of the stinger. Then, raise or lower the AS until it matches the height.

Then, I take one of the poles and put it on top of the receiver and put the other on the end of the stinger. This makes it very, very easy to see angular errors between the stinger and the receiver.

I see how you get the vertical height alignment and the side to side angle alignment. I don't see how you are providing for the up and down angle alignment of the stinger to the receiver.

Once I'm squared up to the receiver and get about 6 inches away, then I adjust the pitch of the receiver as needed. As you said, there are 3 different planes you're working with and the poles help you with the first 2. The last one is just the Mark One Mod Zero eyeball.

Want a "stinger"? Try one of Sean's 2.5' 75# adjustable HA pieces. (I don't remember actual dimensions -- exaggerating for effect -- but the HA stinger even with 4" drop is a wimp in comparison).

I've thought about lighting it and placing a bullseye on the business end.

Now that I think of it, I've seen some bullseye changing pattern LED lamps.

As to setting HA, I've been using a tape measure ten years.

Sigh. Saw what an ordinary 2" bar and ball stinger did to the front end of the guy that ran into it causing a chain reaction accident involving 4 people. And yes, I was the first guy in front of that mess...in a Prius, no less. Had a clean imprint of the car behind me's license plate frame in my bumper.

A ProPride stinger would make a massive mess out of some fool that ran into it... Mine is a bog standard 2" one. A 2.5" would be formidable.
