Good towing/Bad towing!

On my trips, I scan the highway for all types of RV's and especially anything Airstream!

On my trip back from soccer games in Pensacola today, I saw two gross towing examples. Both trailers (SOB's) were either overweight or out of balance or both! The SUV's were badly slopped down in the back and the trailers were slopped towards the hitch. It was clear the tongue weight was WAY more than it was supposed to be!

I never see you AS trailer owners towing something nutty like that! Always a sturdy tow vehicle and properly balanced trailer! Good work!

Signed,

A motorhome owner too chicken to tow something that big!

Well, I must admit....

I have seen a few AS being towed that appeared to be set up improperly. Most common was that the tow vehicle hitch was too low, making the back end stick up.

I have even seen folks towing SOB Fivers, that put way more pin weight on the vehicle than I would think was anywhere near safe. Problem with a fiver is, you have no spring bars to adjust.

I just read this in the RV Forum:

"1987 jeep grand waggoneer 360 v8, 108.7" wheelbase, 750lb max tongue wt,5000lb max towing wt.factory towing package.
Trailer 1989 airstream wt 5000lb dry,750lb tongue wt. ,25' in length double axel.
Is this a dangerous combination?"

Guess what? all these guys with their SOB told him in a very polite way: YOU ARE NUTS.

He did not like their answer, so he posted it again in another discussion !!!!

Moral of that story: a trailer is about as safe as its owner. Not more, not less. Regardless of the make.

Alright there are some examples of improper Airstream set-ups out there. I still think the majority are done very well as opposed to some of the crazy stuff I've seen.

I agree. Lots of great folks out there not trying to win the Darwin award.

Yet, some, it hurts just to think about.....

Regards,

Eric
