Unhappy Ford backup assist sticker placement

Hi all,
I just got my new 2017 FC 25' to go with my 2016 Ford F-150, with the new trailer backup assist feature. Manual tells you to attach a special sticker (provided) horizontally on one Y-hitch arm in a zone 7" to 22" back from the hitch ball. Problem is, there is one of the propane tanks and the cover taking up this zone. Have any Ford F-150 & Airstream owners with backup assist run into this problem AND SOLVED IT?? Love to hear from you.

I have a 27fb international and a 2016 f150 with pro trailer back up assist. I did not install the sticker myself, CanAm did when I picked up my new AS. There is a small corner of the sticker that is under the tank cover but it does not seem to be a problem. The available space on a 25ft might not be the same.

I have the same truck and will have the same AS shortly. I am very curious to hear whether there is a resolution of this issue.

Just saw a post on the F150 Forum:

They confirmed to me that it can be placed either horizontally or vertically as long as it is within their "green zone" of 7" to 22".

Hope this helps someone...

Hi, I helped a neighbor install his sticker; It went on the curb side and a small corner of it went under the propane tank cover as Papa smurf stated. The street side would be blocked by the brake switch.

I have the 2016 with backup assist. My trailer is a 23. No problem. Sticker had to go about 1/2: under tank. Works fine there.

Still not sure if it is worth the trouble. I have to back up a steep driveway and then turn.

Does this imply people might install the sticker on their propane cover?

Also, see this post (#2) which shows the Ford installation booklet: https://www.f150forum.com/f118/pro-t...estion-337277/

It clearly states that the sticker must be horizontal. It also states the entire sticker must be visible to the camera. Of the two conditions, I am guessing that violation of the latter may be of lesser importance. Any other thoughts?

So, a test.

Attach the sticker to a properly sized piece of aluminum. Place the sticker/aluminum on the propane cover, vertically, with double stick tape. Test it.

If it works, you can either rivet the piece of aluminum to the propane cover, or, remove the aluminum and place another sticker on the propane cover.

If it doesn't work, you are out 1 sticker.

I have a 2017 F150 towing a 2013 trailer. I put the sticker on the A frame next to the jack. One end of the sticker just touches the propane cover. The sticker also lays partly on top of the jack base so it's not exactly flat. In the end it barely met the minimum 7" requirement. Backup Assist sees the sticker and works remarkably well.

Well, the proof is in the pudding! I have the same truck so now I know it will work. Thanks for sharing.

I actually put the sticker on the propane cover, and seems to be working fine. All data was good, it found the sticker with no problem and calibrated quickly. I only backed down the street, and zigged and zagged a bit, and worked fine.

Well, I am still learning about the new gizmos on my truck. The '15 F150 was fairly well appointed but had none of the fancy stuff like the new one, namely this pro trailer knob. Like many I have no space on my A frame- little flat space and certainly not clear of the jack mount or the LP tank cover.

Mine would not find the sticker once set up- SURPRISE!

Tomorrow afternoon I will try to set it up with the advice I read on the forum- stick the sticker on the LP tank cover and measure the ball hitch point at the meet point of the stinger to the swivel hitch of the Pro Pride. Hope it works.

I guess you must not have the space I had on my 25' Flying Cloud. Even with it located as shown below, which was within the Ford specification, the system lost it's sync to the sticker on occasion. Great gizmo when it did work however.

Although I see that placing the sticker on the LP cover has apparently worked for some, Ford does say that it needs to be placed horizontally. Good luck.

I have that space but my jack base is must larger and overlaps almost to the edge of the frame. Add to that the pro-pride trailer-installed portion and it is full of something.

Of course I haven't seen your setup, but if it were just the jack base maybe you could devise some sort of little "platform" that would overlap the base and provide a flat spot for the sticker. OTOH, the Pro-Pride hardware might make that impossible anyway....

The strange thing is that on the F150 forum someone says that at least two people have this system working with ProPride hitches on the Airforum website. I cannot find threads on the topic other than this. Supposedly Sean at ProPride last year was working on it but no posts anywhere.

I posted this a while back....

You may want to try pinging Papa Smurf. This is a quote from a post of his from last year... Post was in the "The unofficial pp users guide..." thread.

It is a tight fit on my 27fb international , in fact a part of the sticker is under the propane cover but it works great. Before we left Can Am,Andy did a test drive to make sure everything was set up perfectly and even tried this feature. I think he was surprised it worked so well even if he tought it might have some limitations. For someone like me who did not have any previous towing experience it is a great tool but I am sure many of you with years of experience do not need it.
