Eaz Lift or Reese
I've got a choice I have to make and I'm confused. I've had a 22' 1964 Safari for five years and have been using the Eaz-Lift hitch setup. It's rated at 800 lbs. which I always thought was a bit much for an Airstream with a tongue weight of about 350 lbs. but I was assured it was not and it always seemed to work well. This is coming from someone who has towed a lot of trailers, boat, car, etc. but never with any type of weight distribution hitch so I really have nothing to compare it to. Here's the issue. I just bought another 22" 1964 Airstream Safari to replace the first one. It's a lot nicer. I have the two of them in my driveway and I'm stealing the best from both for the one I'm keeping. Well, now i have to choose between the Eaz-Lift and the Reese. Which would you keep?

I'll probably be excoriated for this blaspheme, but if your TV has a hitch rating of 500lbs + (you're not towing with a Subaru Forester are you?), why would you bother with a WD hitch, assuming your tongue weight is really 350lbs loaded and ready to go?

I'm towing with a '64 Lincoln Continental Convertible. It has a long overhang and soft springs. The trailer will weight it down quite a bit without some help. The original towing guide from Lincoln recommends using a load equalizing hitch. And of course, with the Airstream full it may weigh a bit more.

Dang, that must be one sweet rig! Is that the Lincoln with the suicide doors?
Post some pics of your TV and AS!

Kind of hard to beat the simplicity of the Eaz-Lift, and it's the hitch of choice by CanAm Andy, one of the most (perhaps the most) knowledgeable people when it comes to hitches and tow vehicles. He has set up hundreds of them.

EazLift vs Reese
I have no experience with the EazLift, but I am very happy with the Reese Dual Cam set up for my 25' Safari FB and our Suburban 1500. But, I have a 900# tongue wt.

I would set up the ez lift and try it. Then decide. I expect the soft springs on the car make up for the stiffer bars.

We tow our 25 ft Classic with a Tundra and a Eaz lift and have never had a problem. Sway has never once been a issue. I would definitely recommend.

I had very similar concerns when setting up my '75 Cadillac Eldorado to tow my Minuet with the exception of a slightly smaller rear overhang on the Eldorado. As a part of the process, I obtained a true weight on the hitch of my Minuet (literature indicated 300 to 350 pounds) which turned out to be almost 525 pounds (the Minuet's fresh water tank lies across the very front of the coach and I always travel with it filled). I ended up utilizing a Reese setup that I had from an earlier trailer with 600 pound bars and "classic" clamp on Dual Cam Sway Control, and this setup performed flawlessly for me and gave the Minuet a nice ride with good control to the tow vehicle.

Seems either would work fine. Given my advancing years, I think I’d pick the one that’s easier to handle and call it good ...

I have had Reese since 1967, and one of first dual cams. When Reese broke in 1968 because of design factor, they pd all damages and loss from selling replacement trailer plus full replacement of hitch. This was before dual cam. My dual cam was pur. in 1977, and still have and use, no other brands Old dual cam does not have threads on arm like new does. It was very easy to set up and Reese customer service is the greatest. I would not use any other brand at any price. Before had to pur some pieces and fab. all of hitches.

What is this? It looks like the remnants of some old load leveling system. The Reese brackets are installed further back as you would expect. These old brackets are left over from something. Anyone want to enlighten me?

The Reese is a whole lot lighter. The Eaz Lift is really heavy. That I hate, but I've never used a Reese.

That is the mounting bracket for the cam arm of a Reese Dual Cam system. If you had the rest of it, they work really well. As far as whether to use the EazLift or Reese, I would use the one that most closely matched the weight of the trailer. You know the EazLift is rated for 800lbs of weight distribution, but what is the Reese rated?

I didn't realize I don't have all of the Reese setup. I guess I need to find a picture of what I'm missing. I also don't know the weight rating of the Reese since it doesn't have a big bright label on it like the Eaz Lift. If someone wants to tell me where to find the weight rating on the Reese that would be great.

W/Reese bars measure thickness of bar at the trunnion, 1 inch bar w/cam has 550 lb. rating 1-1/8=750lb. 1-1/4 =1000b. this is from Reese info.

I just measured the Reese bars. They are 1 3/8 so I guess they are way to strong. I also took another look at my Eaz Lift bars. I had remembered wrong regarding their rating. They are rated at 1000 lbs. It looks like both of these are overkill and I should probably get lower rated bars regardless of which brand. Now I really need to know more.

After determining that my Eaz Lift bars are rated for 1000 lbs. and the Reese bars are probably rated for even more, it became excruciatingly obvious that I didn't need to make a choice between these two, but I needed a lot softer bars for one of them. I weighed the tongue. It came in at just about 300 lbs. One of the propane tanks is empty and the other has at least some in it as I'm using it. The Airstream is mostly loaded so the tongue weight shouldn't go much over this. I just bought a couple of Eaz Lift 400 lb. arms off Ebay for $96.24 delivered. I think this will work out just fine.
