Question Coupler Adjustment Freeplay

Since the trailer was setup by an SOB dealer I found that there seems to be a lot of verticle free play when the coupler is latched. The trailer passed state inspection so I assumed that all was well.

I looked expecting to see a nut adjustment and on an airstream and there doesn't seem to be one.

What amount of free play should there be vertically? And is there an adjustment for a 1976 Argosy coupler?

Almost none.

Check the ball size. Should be 2 5/16
A dealer sent me home once with a new trailer on a 2 inch ball. After a noisy ride home, I found that the coupler on trailer was a 2 5/16 inch.

Regards,

Ken

There shouldn't be any up and down play to speak of. Check to make sure that you are not using a 2" ball.

You can find an original style latch here 2-5/16" Marvel Coupler Repair Kit

You may want to check the coupler itself - check the inside forward surface for wear.

arcamedies -

i think that's what the captain of the titanic said as they steamed out of harbor.

alway check and re-check yourself if you think something is amiss.

we had our AS registered w/o the inspector even seeing if the lights worked or checking to see if the hitch was secure.

you are doing the right thing by asking the forum. there's a lot of good people here - all willing to help.

good luck and safe travels
